The 22LR bolt action, Tikka T1x is one of my favorite rifles. It is the rifle I imagine myself grabbing to head off into Z-Day. Reliable, accurate, and able to run well with quiet sub-sonic ammo. I like the original polymer stock paired with a vertical grip and a T3x rubber butt pad. I have paired my lightweight, hikeable setup with a light and low Weaver V3 1-3x optic. With this setup I’ve earned Project Appleseed AQT scores that exceed my Appleseed optimized Ruger 10/22.
While I haven’t suffered a broken firing pin, I’ve heard from many Tikka T1x owners who have and are unable to find a replacement. Beretta is the US importer of the Tikka line and neither they nor any US gun parts seller seems to have the Tikka T1x firing pin in stock. And even if you were to find it in stock, it costs over $70…(although it includes the firing pin spring, the hammer spring, and the hammer).
Chris Zajic, a Tikka T1x owner, has come up with ZP Machine to offer a titanium firing pin for the Tikka T1x.
Not only is the titanium firing pin more affordable, but it will likely prove to be far more durable than the stock one.

The Risk?
Number one is perfectly mirrored Ambi activation (assuming top or bottom mounting) . This takes advantage of bilateral transfer of skill from right hand to left hand.
A switch to choose how the button operates. Either a momentary switch for firefly use (my preferred) or as an on/off toggle switch. See link in description regarding firefly technique.
Activation block to prevent an accidental discharge of position exposing light.
No remote pad clutter or wires exposed to damage.
But here’s what I really like.
Quick snap-on attachment allows me to keep it in a pouch or pocket until needed to keep weapon mass to a minimum.
Unsprung weight idea like on motocross bikes where the weight of the bike is important, but most important is the mass of the moving suspension parts. Likewise, while I do want to reduce my loadout weight, even more important is the mass on my rifle that I must accelerate outside of cover onto target, stop on target, and then bring back behind cover. And this weight is even more pronounced when out on the muzzle end of the rifle.

When testing a firearm I start off with manual of arms practice and lots of dry firing using the MantisX10 Elite paired with a training laser. In the case of this Springfield Armory XDM Elite Compact 10mm, I dry fired over 2,000 times before I ever chambered a single live fire cartridge. Usually I do 1,000 dry fires, but was waiting on 10mm ammo. You can follow along by joining the “AmbGun” MantisX10 group (you don’t have to have the MantisX10 to register)…

And before I even dry fire, I field strip, clean the firearm of all factory preservatives and apply a coat of Sentry Solutions Tuf-Glide Dry Lube. Doesn’t attract dirt, makes it almost self-cleaning, and really smooths things out. The Sentry spray bottles leak badly, so I use an old school metal pistol pump oiler.
I am using a Crossbreed “The Chest Rig” holster with the XDM. After having been flagged multiple times at the range by the safety oblivious, I wanted to emphasize being muzzle-aware when using a chest holster and capitalizing on a disengaged grip safety when holstering.
I also like to check to see if a firearm returns to battery after doing a chamber check with a round in the chamber and a full magazine. And yes, I know the XDM has a loaded chamber indicator...more on that in the forthcoming review.
One of my favorite drills derives from the US Air Marshalls test...draw, point shoot, transition to other hand, mag change, kneel, double tap. Then, given my ambidextral gunfighter advocacy, some left and right hand shooting from cover exercises. And of course, a mountain bike drive by.
