This film has been created entirely from still images, many of which have been merged together with the eighteenth century engravings by Giambattista Piranesi. Piranesi has been widely recognized as Italy's most celebrated artist of engravings of views of Rome. This film is an exploration of the changes to the monumental landscape of Rome over a quarter of a millennium - well after the monuments of Rome were already in ruins. It covers a time when this landscape became recognized for its aesthetic and cultural heritage, a recognition that to a significant extent came because of the dissemination Piranesi's work over the rest of Europe during the 18th Century. This helped to stimulate the 'Grand Tour' which then lead to the stopping of the systematic quarrying of the ruins for materials for new buildings.

Making use of the opportunities of the new medium of digital photography, this show has taken this medium into new territory by taking the imagery back in time by merging it with the pre-photographic art of Piranesi and other artists of the eighteenth and nineteenth century. Except for a brief descriptive introduction, the commentary in the film is entirely composed of historic quotations from the history of the Eternal City. The music used in the sound-track is entirely composed by Italian composer Ottorino Respighi, all of which was inspired by the Roman urban landscape.

The digital images were created during a year-long National Endowment for the Arts 'Rome Prize' Fellowship at the American Academy in Rome in 2003. In this version of ROME WAS! Ruins Eternal, most of the scenes that were edited out for the 30 minute version, have been restored. The movie is now 43 minutes in length.

Ecrits il y a plus de 70 ans, ces deux romans trouvent un écho extraordinaire dans nos sociétés d'aujourd'hui : faits alternatifs, fake news, ultra-surveillance... Orwell et Huxley semblent avoir imaginé toutes les dérives de nos sociétés.

Si George Orwell a lu avec passion le roman de son aîné, l’ancien combattant du POUM (Parti ouvrier d’unification marxiste) en Catalogne pendant la guerre d’Espagne a été marqué par la violence et la propagande des fascismes en Europe comme du stalinisme en URSS. Issu d’une famille nantie de scientifiques et frère d’un biologiste eugéniste, Huxley, à son tour, jugera le livre d’Orwell "profondément important", mais ne partagera pas sa vision de l’avenir, qui ne peut, selon lui, se réduire à "une botte dans un visage". L'un redoute une dictature scientiste qui, en s’appuyant sur les biotechnologies, asservirait des individus programmés, quand l’autre imagine un État bureaucratique et répressif qui confisquerait la liberté de penser et la mémoire.

Monstre hybride
En confrontant les versions du "monde d’après" d’Aldous Huxley et de George Orwell, comme les itinéraires respectifs des deux écrivains, ce documentaire montre combien leurs œuvres visionnaires, qui ont en commun la manipulation du langage et la falsification de l’histoire, rencontrent les enjeux glaçants du monde contemporain, sorte de monstre hybride à la croisée de leurs romans. Éclairée par les analyses de critiques, d’écrivains (Boualem Sansal) et de philosophes (Cynthia Fleury), comme de l’émouvant témoignage du fils adoptif de George Orwell, Richard Blair, une relecture opportune, au temps de la surconsommation, des caméras à reconnaissance faciale, des réseaux sociaux ou encore des éructations de Donald Trump qui martèle : "Ce que vous voyez et lisez n’est pas la vérité."

George Orwell und Aldous Huxley - zwei visionäre Science-Fiction-Autoren, deren Lebenswege sich bereits in jungen Jahren kreuzten. Die vor mehr als 70 Jahren erschienen Meisterwerke "Schöne neue Welt" und "1984" sind gerade heute wieder brandaktuell, in Zeiten von alternativen Fakten, Fake News und ständiger Überwachung.

Datenspeicherung, Fake News, Designerbabys, der massive Einsatz von Antidepressiva – die Realität von heute hat die Fiktion von gestern fast schon eingeholt. Bereits vor über 70 Jahren hatten zwei Schriftsteller vor solchen Entwicklungen in „Schöne neue Welt“ und „1984“ gewarnt. Die Ähnlichkeiten sind so frappierend, dass „1984“ nach der Wahl von Donald Trump zum Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika erneut auf den Bestsellerlisten der USA stand. Aldous Huxley und George Orwell erwiesen sich als geniale Zukunftsvisionäre. Die beiden Engländer waren Zeitgenossen: Huxley wurde 1894 in Godalming in Sussex und Orwell, mit bürgerlichem Namen Eric Blair, 1903 im indischen Motihari geboren. Ihre Lebenswege kreuzten sich im berühmten Eton College, obwohl sie aus zwei völlig unterschiedlichen Welten kamen: Huxley entstammte einer britischen Intellektuellendynastie, während Orwell in ärmlichen Verhältnissen aufgewachsen war. Orwell las „Schöne neue Welt“ kurz nach Erscheinen und schickte seinen Roman „1984“ direkt nach der Veröffentlichung an Huxley. Dieser schrieb daraufhin an Orwell, dass er seinen Roman als „von grundlegender Bedeutung“ ansehe, die Zukunft jedoch nicht auf eine Politik der schieren Gewalt – auf einen „Stiefel im Gesicht der Menschheit“ – reduziert werden könne. Anders ausgedrückt vertrat Huxley die Auffassung, dass seine Vision der Zukunft die wahrscheinlichere war: eine auf wissenschaftlichen Methoden aufbauende „perfekte“ Diktatur, in der die Individuen zu Herrschaftszwecken so programmiert werden, dass sie gerne dienen und ihr Sklavendasein sogar lieben. Bei Orwell hingegen kontrolliert der Totalitarismus die Gedanken und setzt gezielt Lügen sowie permanente Überwachung ein. Sind die unterschiedlichen alptraumhaften Zukunftsszenarien Huxleys und Orwells auf ihre unterschiedlichen Lebenswege zurückzuführen? Und leben wir heute eher in der Welt aus „1984“ oder in der „Schönen neuen Welt“?
