Kotaro is visited by Nobuhiko and Shunsuke, the latter who believes Aoi is in danger with Nick. With the location, Kotaro and Nobuhiko set off on their bikes.

The location, which was the village where Kotaro and Nobuhiko had been born, is the same lab Bilgenia has been using to turn humans into Kaijins. As Aoi arrives and reunites with her mother, she realizes that Nick led her into a trap. Nick is knocked unconscious, and Aoi is tied up by Bilgenia and turned into a Kaijin.

Kotaro and Nobuhiko arrive to the sight of the Mantis Kaijin. While Kotaro goes to fight it, Nobuhiko fights Bilgenia. Midway, Kotaro is horrified to discover that Aoi has now become a Kaijin, and returns to outside the lab. Fueled by anger, Kotaro unlocks a new form and transforms into Kamen Rider Black Sun for the first time, determined to kill Bilgenia for turning Aoi into a Kaijin. Before Kotaro is able to finish the job, Bilgenia along with Aoi are taken away by a flying Kaijin.

While Bilgenia attempts to recover from his fight, he forces Aoi to live out the rest of her life as a Kaijin while taking the Kingstone from her. The Kingstone is presented to the Gorgom Party, while Prime Minister Donami reveals that he was in possession of the second one.

Nobuhiko brings Kotaro to his hideout where the new recruits are to work out their plan to fight the Gorgom Party. 50 years ago, Yukari reveals to Kotaro her intent to kill the Creation King, and tells this to Nobuhiko the next morning. Though they initially had disagreed with Yukari, they decide to trust her with their Kingstones. However, Shinichi Donami, who had convinced Komori to untie him, had secretly overheard the plan to kill the Creation King.

Every year it seems like anime gets weirder, wilder, and more creative. There’s a natural tendency to keep moving forward that continues to push the medium to extreme places. This excess can function at the series’ surface level, but it’s also led to a trend where stylized expressions of magic, energy, or even violence can become powerful metaphors for the internal problems that consume us all. A lot of anime have pushed this idea to the extreme, but few are more ridiculous than Chainsaw Man, an anime where a mild-mannered teen named Denji transforms into a chainsaw-limbed God of destruction. In Chainsaw Man, this weapon’s engine revs loudly and body parts and viscera fly with reckless abandon, but the noise of this spectacle doesn’t drown out the heart and soul of the characters underneath.

The biggest fault against Chainsaw Man’s first episode is that it’s exactly that: a first episode. Chainsaw Man exposes audiences to a radical new universe of Devils, but “Dog & Chainsaw” is endemic of many extravagant anime premieres that hold back on answers and instead feast on spectacles. That being said, “Dog & Chainsaw” still accomplishes its goal and it contains flashes of brilliance, brutality, and creativity.

This premiere doesn’t attempt to bite off more than it can chew and it’s largely focused on Denji and his sordid lot in life. It’s not until the episode’s final seconds that Maki and the rest of Public Safety show up to complicate the story and introduce Denji to a whole new world of professional Devil Hunters. In fact, there’s a lot in common with the first episode of Chainsaw Man and the premieres of Devilman Crybaby or Tokyo Ghoul, two other dark anime where a beleaguered protagonist gets tempted over to a transformative world of evil. This is hardly a fresh anime trope, but hopefully Chainsaw Man manages to avoid the same pitfalls that held back these at-one-point similar seinen series.

Let’s face it. None of the promotional tie-ins or over-the-top publicity stunts that the Cyberpunk 2077 video game received before its release (including the massive announcement that actor Keanu Reeves would be one of the main characters in the story) helped soften the blow that came out of the disastrous December 10th, 2020 glitch-ridden launch. From the first step taken in the futuristic, cyber-engulfed world of Night City, players were either greeted with some sort of game-breaking bug or catastrophic performance issue. These massive missteps completely broke down the fully immersive, first-person experience promised to fans years before by the developers of 2077, CD Projekt Red.

With gamers holding their heads in shame each time they witnessed their own avatar suddenly fall through the floor, a car slowly fusing with another upon collision, or NPCs who would casually walk right through what was supposed to be closed doors, Cyberpunk 2077 was downright unplayable in early versions. But rest assured, this was just not acceptable for the same studio that brought us the award-winning series of video games, The Witcher.

CD Projekt Red is working hard on its promise to make amends to its loyal fans. Starting from even a week before launch and almost every other month thereafter, patches were sent out to players that repaired any defects that initially hindered the gameplay mechanics and visual display. Fast-forward two years later, and with only a handful of bugs remaining within the game, CD Projekt Red decided that it was in their best interest to go the extra mile in restoring trust between publisher and player.
