POLK CITY, Florida, USA – It’s 5:30 pm on November 9th, 2020 and 15-year-old Kimberly Stone is giving a statement to a detective of Florida’s Polk County.
She had been in a van with three other occupants when it was pulled over by police on a tip from a 911 caller that it was involved in a hit-and-run.
The two were speaking in the area of Berkeley Road and Denton Avenue, about seven miles or 11 kilometers south from the scene of the incident where an older woman was critically injured after being struck by the vehicle.
“I was curled up in the backseat,” Kimberly told the detective.
She said her boyfriend, who was the driver, and two other friends got into the van after visiting the home of Hunter Penton, a fellow student at Auburndale High School.
After putting the car in drive, she said her boyfriend took a left turn out of the spot they parked at, which was partially on the grass directly across the street from the home.
“That’s when Hunter’s mom walked out and we didn’t have time to stop,” an emotional Kimberly said during the seven-minute interview. “And the van, it just, it just hit her.
“I feel so bad because she would let me into her house and she fed me,” Kimberly said, referring to 52-year-old Suzette Penton. “And she was like my mom when my mom left me. And I just sat there and watched and I couldn’t do anything.”
She said they didn’t know in the moment whether to stop or keep going after realizing they had hit Suzette. But they kept going anyway.
Suzette was laying facedown and motionless on the pavement. She was rushed to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center in life threatening condition with a fractured skull, severe brain bleeding and a broken leg. She was put in the intensive care unit.
Within the space of three weeks, investigators were able to quickly piece together the story of how this all happened.
Was it a freak accident or something more?
The answer to that question, according to investigators, would come relatively quickly.
That’s because the entire event – from beginning to end – was recorded.

On September 15, 2023 at approximately 1:20 AM, Officer Brock Westerman with the Pullman Police Department was on patrol on NE B Street near NE California Street. As he drove northbound, he observed a 2017 Kia Sportage heading southbound that turned on to NE California Street without signaling. As he pursued the vehicle, the driver nearly struck a curb and made another turn without signaling on to NE A Street. Officer Westerman activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop, and the vehicle pulled into a parking lot on the 800 block of NE A Street. He proceeded to make contact with the driver, who was identified as 19-year-old Mairead Quigley.
After he made contact with Mairead, he detected the odor of alcohol and noticed that her eyes were watery and bloodshot. He asked for her license, but she was only able to provide him with her registration. When he asked Mairead if she had been drinking, she seemed unwilling to answer questions. Based on his suspicion of impairment, Officer Westerman asked Mariead to exit the vehicle and offered her an opportunity to participate in field sobriety exercises.
Mairead was uncooperative and ultimately refused to complete any field sobriety exercises. However, he decided to place Mairead under arrest for driving under the influence based on her erratic driving and other indicators of impairment that he had observed. After she was placed in the patrol car, Officer Westerman spoke to her boyfriend and told her that she was going to be released in about 6 hours. He returned to his patrol car and transported Mairead to the Pullman Police Department for further processing.
Once they were at police HQ, Officer Westerman read Mairead her Miranda rights as well as the Implient Consent Warning, and she agreed to submit breath samples for testing. He began the 20-minute observation period, and Mairead admitted to consuming alcohol in the hours prior. After the breathalyzer was administered, her Alcotest results indicated a BAC of 0.179% (lowest IR result).
After Officer Westerman was finished with administering the breathalyzer, he placed Mairead in a cell. After a brief holding period, Mairead was removed from the cell to be photographed and fingerprinted. Afterwards, her belongings were returned to her and she was released with a summons to appear in court. Officer Westerman cited Mairead under RCW 46.61.502 for driving under the influence and released her pending a court appearance in Colfax.
Court records indicate that on October 12, 2023, Mairead pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and she was sentenced to 1 day in jail (364 days in jail with 363 days suspended) and 24 months of supervised probation. The fine was waived, but her license was suspended for 90 days and she was required to pay a DUI cost recovery fee of $67.33. She also had to comply with the terms and conditions of her probation such as attending a DUI Victim Impact Panel within 3 months and using an ignition interlock device during her license suspension.

On March 7th, 2023, an officer was called by school staff in reference to a drunk minor who had been misbehaving and was very uncooperative. She had also hidden a bottle of alcohol in her pocket and wasn’t taking it out. Even after the officer warned her, the female continued to verbally abuse him and the staff constantly. The female persistently showed resistance and verbally abused everybody in the room. Soon, the female's mother arrived and engaged in a heated argument with the staff and the officer. Another officer arrived at the scene and tried to understand the situation from the reporting officer. Since the female was a minor, the officer gave her the option to be released on citation if she behaved. The other officer explained to the female’s mother what had happened. The mother became defensive and attempted to justify her daughter’s actions. The female continued to complain about the handcuffs. Later, the female’s mother called the police department to file a complaint about the officer’s behavior. The female was charged with battery on a school personnel, resisting and minor in possession of alcohol.

This is a former student of mine. I had him in a class when he was a freshman, this happened during his sophomore year. I still have emails from his mother when he was in my class. She was at her wits end with his behavior. At one point, we were doing a fun public speaking unit in class, where students brought in a bag filled with items that showed their interests and goals in life...The Brown Bag speech activity, like a show and tell. I was so worried he was going to bring a weapon to school in his bag, that I asked the school resource officer to stand outside my room on the day Greg gave his speech. I was never more relieved than when he was done with that speech! It was actually a great presentation. He was extremely intelligent, but very disturbed. Needless to say, I was not surprised when I heard what he did. I sometimes look back at the emails from his mom...just to remember her.

@Mikeygeee124 Not really, but the presentation and the items in the bag explained how he wanted to go into law enforcement, so one of them I do remember was an object from his time in the youth Police Explorers program.

@UnKownBros his future as a police officer, and he had a quote that he liked that resonated with him. I can't remember what it was, but I do remember that we were all surprised at how uplifting and humorous his presentation actually was! He was usually moody and rude. The kids in that class really didn't like him, so at that moment it was nice to see a glimpse of a happy kid. I was just very relieved when it was over. I think I clapped the loudest because I was actually sitting there thinking, "We lived!"

RENTON, Washington, USA -- It’s the spring of 2011 and students are in-between classes at Lindbergh Senior High School in Renton, a city in Washington state.
The air is heavy at the school because it’s now been over a year since one of its own, 19-year-old Kathy Chou, had gone missing after going for a walk from her home one spring night.
One of Kathy’s friends had been thinking a lot about her since she vanished.
As she is making her way to class, she crosses paths in the hallway with another student named Jaymie Marlow, who was part of Kathy’s friend group. At least at one point.
One thing that catches her eye is Jaymie’s shoes, a relatively unique knee-high version of the famous Converse sneakers. They were black with colored white toe caps and white shoelaces.
This bothered Kathy’s friend because she felt it was weird for Jaymie to be wearing shoes similar to Kathy’s during a time when there has been no closure about what had happened to Kathy.
What the friend didn’t know at the time was that her observation had a far darker story than she could have ever imagined.
