At our homestead we sell and use duck eggs and therefore have laying ducks. Duck eggs have a different consistency than a chicken egg and are often preferred for use in baking. Ducks eat both plants and insects and are great for reducing snail populations which is why we let them run loose around the orchard and garden areas. Once the garden becomes active for the season, we will keep the ducks out of that area.

At our homestead we use chicken leg bands as a reliable and convenient way to keep track of our birds. The bands are made of plastic, which makes them durable and long-lasting.
Our main reason for using chicken leg bands is that they allow us to easily establish the age of the birds by using a unique color for each year. This is important for managing our flock, as it allows us to determine which birds are at the optimal age for egg laying and which birds are older. Removing older birds is necessary for the proper care and management of our flock.
The chicken leg bands have been safe for the birds. They are flexible and don’t appear to constrict or cause any discomfort to the birds’ legs. They are easy to put on and take off.
Here’s the thing. You need to maximize your flock’s egg production without a lot of paperwork or memorization skills. You have enough on your mind. Make your life easier by banding the birds by year so you can cycle your flock and keep egg production at its peak.

Today’s product pick is the Cobrahead weeder and cultivator hand tool. I have had my Cobrahead for nearly 15 years and it is still solid and working like the day I got it. If I had to pick my favorite garden tool, this is it. The blade can cut through the driest clay soils to rid you of weeds. Because the tip is small, it is easy to get up close to your treasured plants. If you angle the weeder in front of the weed and cut down into the soil, most of the time you will pull it out in one pass. You can also damage weeds by cutting them off below the soil surface. On larger areas turn the tool sideways and use it similar to a stirrup hoe.
Here’s the thing. Vegetable gardening can be one of the most enjoyable activities at your homestead. Unfortunately, weeds come along for the ride. Too many weeds leads to frustration and frustration is a motivation killer. Get the right tool for the job and keep your garden looking great and producing food.

We use these buckets for water for our goats and other animals at the homestead. They are a rugged bucket, BPA free, and made in USA, The Fortiflex buckets are very durable and built to last. We have many that are a least a decade old and are still in use. They do not crack if frozen. The best part is the handle which is a thick metal that is affixed with metal to the bucket rim. I have never had a handle break on me while using these buckets.
We regularly wash the buckets with a dish soap and nylon brush to keep them clean. Over time you will see minor scratches, but it does not affect the functionality. The only time we take them out of circulation is if the handle becomes so bent that it no longer will lie flat. This problem is normally caused by an unruly goat.
When we do remove a bucket from animal use, we remove the handle and use it for storing items like fence staples, insulators, or other items we need to keep organized at the homestead barn.
Here’s the thing. Caring for your livestock is a daily commitment. You don’t want to be replacing items that you need daily. Fortiflex buckets are extremely rugged and have lasted many, many years for us.

I was recommended these and decided to check them out. I know many of you can relate to the shortage of canning lids we’ve experienced in our recent past. There was a year when I was forced to try other brands, and I experienced seal issues, buckling lids and disappointment.
The Forjars Canning Lids have made my canning experience pleasant again. They come in regular and wide mouth sizes and are reasonably priced. They can be used in water bath, pressure, steam and vacuum seal canning.
As a life-long high volume canner averaging about 500 to 600 jars per year, I find these to be a quality lid. They are rust proof, BPA free, and from a company in America. I’ve tried them with several canner loads and I’m impressed with the quality.
Here’s the thing. Cheap lids are not always your friend. Your time is valuable and as all of us homesteaders know, we are always needing more time and less frustration. Get the right product for the job.

When you begin to layout your homestead zones, keep your energy requirements in mind. Energy (both physical and non-physical, such as electricity) will be required at every homestead. The idea is to be as efficient with your precious resources as possible. Concentrate your energy “hogs” in as small an area as possible and as you go further from your energy hub, try to make these areas less dependent on your resources. Remember, your physical energy is rather constrained. We only have so many hours in a day.
The same consideration should be made for non-physical energy (typically electricity), as well. While power might be available 24/7, it has a cost. If you are on-grid there is a monthly bill. If you are off-grid there is time and money involved in setting up and maintaining your off-grid system. Quite frankly, no energy is free, so manage it wisely.
Planning is key to having an effective homestead. Think of your homestead zones like a bullseye with the most intense energy needs centralized in the smallest space with gradually less intense zones circling outside the central area. Also, keep in mind areas that might be on your “wish list”. Will you be putting in an orchard in 5 years?

Understanding when, why, and how to bottle feed milk replacer to your kid goats helps them to get off to a good start in life. Understanding the internal changes that are occurring to your kid goat as you feed them helps you to be a good goat farmer. At our homestead, we’ve been raising goats for 17 years and have had many different situations to deal with. While we are always learning, we also like to share and hear from others about raising goats and homesteading.
In this video I will be talking about some of the physical changes that occur with the goat kid as they are bottle fed. The biggest change has to do with the goat’s four stomachs – the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum (the true stomach). You will learn why milk is only suitable for the one stomach and why hay needs to be introduced to add bacteria to the kid’s gut in order to start it functioning properly as it grows and as the roles of the stomachs change. Find out why kids shiver after eating, proper milk temperature, how we wean the goats, and more.

According to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, the river otter (Lontra canadensis) is the most elusive aquatic mammal in Pennsylvania. It belongs to the mustelid or weasel family.
At our homestead we are fortunate to have one of these critters living at our pond. We call him Fred (at the homestead). He entertains us daily. We think Fred is a male because of his size, but we aren’t really certain. According to the Pa Game Commission, a mature male otter weighs between 10 and 25 pounds and is 30 to 40 inches in length plus a 12 to 15 inch tail. Females are about 25 percent smaller. We estimate Fred to be at least four feet in length from head to tail tip.
Otters eat fish, frogs, turtles, snails, snakes, snake eggs, worms, insects, aquatic plants, roots, birds and small mammals, all of which we have an ample supply at the homestead.
Otters have good hearing and superb eyesight below water. Their eyesight out of the water is average. Their sense of smell is also good.
The otter is a fast swimmer at up to 7 miles per hour, and they can stay under water up to four minutes.
Otters like to live in dens at the edges of lakes, rivers and streams. Fred is no exception and has made a house directly across the pond from our house. We often enjoy breakfast together (us on our porch deck and Fred on his floating log near his den).
Otters make noises including chirps, chitterings, chuckles, and grumblings. They also scream, but this is a danger call. We often hear Fred making “happy” sounds as he enjoys his fish tacos (minus the shells, lettuce, tomato, cheese, onions and hot sauce). Okay, so really he’s just eating fish. (ha ha).
Here’s something odd about our otter. According to multiple sources about otters, we learned that they are mainly nocturnal animals. However, Fred seems to like the day time. We see him just about every day. The other thing we have noticed is he is a fair weather otter. If it is bitterly cold or stormy, we rarely see him. However, on nice days, he swims the pond.
The game commission reports a wild otter’s life span is 15 years and those in captivity live up to 25 years. This is such good news for us as we hope to see Fred for a long time and we’ll continue sharing more information on our channel.

Today at our homestead, we're going to talk about the different colored leg bands that you may see on our chickens, and why we use them.
The different colors of leg bands for us, serve to indicate the year a chicken was born. For example, red leg bands are used on our chickens born in 2020, while blue leg bands are used on our chickens born in 2022. Attaching the leg bands is a simple process.
The leg bands do not interfere with the chickens' movement or their ability to lay eggs. In fact, the leg bands help us to easily identify and keep track of our chickens. Leg bands monitor the age of our birds, so that when their prime laying time is up, we can identify the older birds and send them to the butcher. This helps us to ensure that our chickens are well cared for, and that we are getting the most out of our flock.

Today we’re talking about the importance of hay and our livestock. Hay is an essential feed for many types of livestock, including horses, cows, sheep, rabbits, and goats. It's an important source of nutrition, providing them with necessary vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
There are different types of hay available and hay is sold in different packages. Common hay types are timothy, orchard grass, clover, and alfalfa. Each type has its own unique nutritional value, so it's important to choose the right one for your animals.
Hay comes in many forms including large bales, rounds, and small squares, and each varies in weight depending on the farmer and the equipment. Each type of form has benefits and faults.
When it comes to feeding hay, it's important to not overdo it. A general rule of thumb is to feed about 1-4% of an animal's body weight in hay per day. However, this can vary depending on the type of animal and its activity level.
When choosing hay, it's important to consider the quality. It should be green, leafy, and free of mold and dust. It's also important to store hay properly to ensure it stays fresh and nutritious for your animals.

Hi Friends!
Security is a topic to think about for your homestead. And, as homesteaders we have more to worry about than just intruders or trespassers. We have ourselves and family to think about; our livestock and poultry; our gardens; and our land.
We care about ourselves and family, so safety around the homestead is crucial for security. Keep projects orderly and practice good safety around your farming activities. Wear proper gear and try to keep good health.
We also have our livestock and poultry to worry about. We need to make sure the animals are safe from themselves and from predators. We all know about that one animal that is always getting it’s head or limb stuck somewhere or worse – getting out of the fence! Plus we need to be diligent about keeping predators at bay. A coyote in a chicken house can lead to a pen of dead birds in the morning.
Additionally, our garden needs to be secure. Maintain good fencing to keep rabbits and deer at bay. Keep the garden as close to the house as possible so you have eyes on it as much as possible.
Finally, we need to keep our land safe. Trespassers, whether intentional or not, need to know where the property lines end. Learn self-defense. Be diligent about marking survey lines and posting signs, maintain areas so the property looks as if it is patrolled regularly, and put up cameras if it is affordable and logistical for you.
Just some topics to consider. Having security at your homestead will give you less stress. We homesteaders already have enough to do, so less stress is a good thing.

There are basically four life stages for a chicken.
1. EGG - Chickens begin as fertilized eggs. Eggs take about 21 days to hatch.
2. CHICK - A chick is a newborn chicken.
3. PULLETS and COCKERELS - A pullet is an immature female chicken. A cockerel is an immature male chicken.
4. HENS and ROOSTERS - A hen is a mature female chicken. A hen is considered mature when she starts to lay eggs (typically 6 to 8 months old). A rooster is a mature male chicken.

We are full time homesteaders at Pioneer Mountain Homestead in the Appalachian Mountains of south-central Pennsylvania. We have a sawmill, produce garden, honeybees, layer hens, laying ducks, pigs, and goats. Additionally, we provide boat and camper storage to nearby visitors of Raystown Lake and sell firewood and lumber in south central Pennsylvania. Our journey is to be as self-reliant as we can be; to live as much as we can from the resources we have at hand; to effectively be productive with as minimal environmental impact as possible; to raise food in an organic manner; and to give back to our community through education or demonstration. Pioneer Mountain Homestead's motto is "Embracing Everything Farm and Forest". We are a multifaceted establishment providing several products and services including: sawmill services and rough-cut lumber, firewood delivery and sales, boat storage and camper storage, dry camping, produce (vegetables and small fruits), honey, and egg sales. The Homestead is located within the Appalachian Mountains of south-central Pennsylvania and within one mile of Shy Beaver Boat Launch at Raystown Lake.
In addition to our physical location, we also provide information on homesteading, sawmilling, and firewood. We do this through online content: both written blogs and videos. Topics include woodworking, sawmill work, firewood processing, gardening, food preservation, sewing, fiber crafts, goats, chickens, ducks, and other farming activities.
