The OUT command

The OUT command is a powerful command is multifaceted command that has many different meanings and since we teach Context to a dog they fully understand what that is, for instance, if a dog has a ball and we say OUT the dog drops the ball and moves away from it, if the dog is eating food and we say out, they stop eating and move away from the bowl (great for resource guarders) if the dog is in our space or in our way (always in the kitchen when you are cooking for instance) you say OUT the dog moves away from the kitchen area, another great use is if 2 dogs are playing maybe too rough, or if one dog is bothering another dog you can say OUT and your dog will move away from that dog, training each of those things has a training protocol and not only do we do the fundamental work with the dog, we then do all of the proofing of it and put it to use, first in a controlled set up situation and then, we do it randomly to make sure the dog understands what we want.

If the dog is not understanding we give the dog plenty of guidance on how they should respond in each situation, this way the dog understands and if you need to correct the dog for not listening it is fair to do so and they respond to the correction. The reason is, you have role played what to do when they are corrected for not listening, this is all part of a comprehensive training program we do with every dog that comes into our program, we also have online courses that teach this and we teach folks with our remote (Done with You) online training program.

Toys and other material things for your dogs don’t get you better behavior

We have a wonderful program called “Community” and in there we offer lots of coaching, in fact we have a few different coaching programs available for folks who want a better life with their dogs.

This comment from one of the members really makes such an important point, first let me clarify, you can have as many toys and material things for your dog as you want, you can spend as much or as little money on things for your dog as you want, what it is important to realize though that by doing so it does not stop unwanted behaviors, it does not change the dogs state of mind, it does not train behaviors ( though you can use a toy as your reward system just like food training as well as toys are great for increasing drive for a reward based training program) but the bigger issue this concept of having material things for your dog does not give you a better dog.

Most of the material things for your dog are actually for your own happiness, we love to get stuff for our dog, I can’t tell you how many phone calls I have gotten from folks who are struggling with serious behavioral issues with their dogs and they tell me “my dog has the best of everything, the best bed, the best toys (and lots of them) I have my dog groomed and bathed by the best groomer (we love groomers don’t get me wrong) and so many other things that are material in nature. Unfortunately none of that transfers to a dog that has good obedience, stops unwanted behavior and gives your dog a good state of mind,

A few easy examples, my dog destroys the furniture in my house, I don’t understand since they have lots of dog toys to chew one.

My dog has incredible separation anxiety, I don’t understand I leave my dog with all kinds of great puzzles and toys and they have a very comfy bed in the crate when I leave.

I know, but none of that transfers.

Guess what transfers, Training and Behavior Modification and State of Mind Work. Let’s back to all of our foundation work and start doing what truly trains what..

Is it bad to do rough play with my dog?

Your dog your rules.

If you want to play rough, go for it. Just make sure you can turn it on and off.

if you are getting your dog all ramped up, you need to be able to get it to immediately be able to go into a calm mode immediately.

Teach your dog how to exist first before it makes friends

When it comes to rehabbing reactivity or dog aggression, remember EXISTENCE is always step one.

You need to walk before you run.

We never ever push dogs to be “best friends” with dogs at the beginning of the process, if ever actually…

…all we care about is them being able to mind their business and NOT explode on them.

As you can see, Theo + Beau came in HOT 🔥 at their drop off. Every dog, no matter how far away, was a massive trigger to them. This is literally what EVERY walk looked like for them.

When we stopped all that nonsense behavior, we found these two just actually have no idea how to behave around other dogs at all.

They are lacking crucial social skills, but we aren’t forcing them to socialize.

We let them have their space and advocate for them in the social yard because right now, that’s about all they can handle.

Forcing your dog to interact with other dogs will only HINDER your progress.

Let them know what it feels like to be neutral and calm around their triggers, and you’ll eventually have way more success for the long term.

Existence is some of the most powerful training you can do with your dog. No matter what behaviors they’re struggling with!!

Dogs and bikes Fail

🤣🤣🤣 remember that time Jeff busted his face on a kids bike?

Rough times. But we can all laugh now at least!!

In all fairness the normal sized bike was broken, so this was the only bike available….and it also ended up *broken*

We do cover the *proper* way to do this inside of our Green to Graduate program as a bonus module 🤣
