On July 25th, 2020, The MV WAKASHIO ploughed into the coral reefs off the island nation of Mauritius and began leaking oil into the Indian Ocean.

As a result of both the spill and the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, many Mauritians were jobless and directly defied government orders by beginning to clean the coastline themselves in order to survive financially and save their ocean.

The oil spill occurred near popular tourist beaches but also near two environmentally protected areas, endangering coral and marine life. The spill poses great economic and ecological implications for the island, and many fear it will take decades to recover.

With millions of Californians back under strict stay-at-home orders until at least the end of the holiday season, another very real threat looms large for residents seeking refuge from Covid-19 indoors: earthquakes and infrastructure. The majority of Californians live within 30 miles of an active fault line. And while the states seismic activity is nothing new, it’s estimated that only 20% of its residents have earthquake insurance.

Following outcry from housing activists in recent years, Los Angeles has begun releasing records of its most at-risk structures revealing that some fifteen thousand buildings are prone vulnerable to collapse in a major earthquake. As construction crews around Los Angeles work towards a 2022 deadline to retrofit soft-story structures, missed deadlines means more residents building owners are left exposed. Despite Los Angeles now having the nation’s strongest earthquake safety laws, many fear that progress won’t come soon enough.

The threats are in response to our inquiries about documents related to former RNC deputy finance co-chair, defense contractor, and recently indicted figure caught up in the 1MDB foreign-influence scandal Elliott Broidy, in particular his relation to Guo Wengui and what appear to be ITAR-required munitions deals for armored vehicles to Nigeria. Finally, we head to Colorado’s Ascendence International to pursue the cold, hard truth.

In our premiere episode of SCNR Investigates, we set up the stakes surrounding the seemingly omnipresent Chinese billionaire Guo Wengui. From yacht time with Steve Bannon to stogies with Rudy Giuliani and what seem like near-constant online flame wars with the Chinese Communist Party’s elite, Guo is a busy man with a complicated plan that no on can seemingly wrap their heads around. Is Guo the firebrand dissident he claims to be, or is he secretly working for the CCP? Did he develop a cryptocurrency with as-yet unknown parties against which he committed securities fraud through his GTV app? How does his existence intertwine with the 1MDB scandal? Watch and find out. (Editorial note: Requests for comment from Guo Wengui, Apple, and Stripe went unanswered as of air time.)
