There are many choices when it comes to purchasing cannabis products, particularly when it comes to strains. Are customers loyal to certain strain types and brands when they’re purchasing #PreRolls? To find out we looked at the repeat purchase rates, or the rate at which customers returned to the same strain type, strain name, or brand in a twelve month period in Washington.

While there is an overwhelming amount of strains available in the Pre-Roll category, we can see that customers tend to return to the types of strains and brands that they’ve previously purchased. Knowing this information can be particularly valuable when trying to target consumers with promotions for certain types of strains or brands.

Cultivation & Retail, historically the most significant sector for equity financing, accounted for only $14M (1.6%) of equity raised YTD in 2022 compared to $1.9B (52%) in 2021. We expect this trend to continue for several reasons:

The MSOs have been able to use equity in acquisitions, one of their primary needs for new capital.

The Tier 1 MSOs have strong cash positions and are expected to be free cash flow positive in 2022 and 2023, eliminating any pressing need to issue equity in a down market.

Greater availability and better pricing of debt is a further restraining factor.

Investment/M&A, which is chiefly composed of SPAC IPOS, have also fallen deeply out of favor. They made up only 9.9% of 2022 YTD compared to 16.1 % in 2021 and are likely to represent a lower percentage in future periods due to Increased SEC scrutiny and poor performance of de-SPAC’d stocks.

The total U.S. economic impact from marijuana sales in 2022 is expected to reach $99 billion – up more than 20% from last year – and upwards of $155 billion in 2026, according to analysis from the newly published MJBiz Factbook.

The bulk of industry growth during the forecast period will come from the East coast, as Western markets reach maturity and saturation.

That impact comes directly from the day-to-day needs of workers in the cannabis industry, including spending on life’s necessities such as housing, transportation, entertainment and more.

In many markets, cannabis companies are restricted in where they can operate, but they often bring new business activity to areas that previously were blighted or couldn’t attract such enterprises.

While these products are far removed from the cannabis plant in its natural form, #VapePens provide consumers with convenience, portability, and the ability to enjoy reliable and repeatable experiences.

These features, along with the increasing sophistication of extraction methods and hardware technologies, have driven the Vapor Pen category to a prominent position in both the US and Canadian adult-use cannabis markets.

In this report, we once again examine the current and past performance of Vapor Pens along with a breakdown by product segment, demographics, pricing, and more.

As we explored in our last report, Flower is the dominant category in every market. This isn’t that surprising. It is the least processed form of cannabis, and therefore often considered the most affordable product format.

It is also the most versatile form of cannabis. Consumers can use it in a variety of different ways, whether it’s simply smoked, vaped, or used as an ingredient in some home-made edibles.

On the other hand, Flower is also the most susceptible category to commoditization and price compression. We also see a tendency for Flower market share to start high in newer markets, and then decrease over time as the market matures.

In this report, we again dive deep into Flower category performance, examining changes in market share over time, segments, pricing, demographics, and more.

According to economists, Dr. Robin Goldstein and Professor Daniel Sumner, legal weed presents an economic conundrum—while nearly 40% of Americans can walk into a store today to purchase weed legally, why do many still buy it illegally?

Across North America, legal weed consumers face high prices and not enough retailers, while the predicted windfall of tax revenue has been muted. On the business side, investors are reeling, companies have shut down, and farms have failed. Many of the grandiose early promises of legalization have evaporated.

In their timely new book, CAN LEGAL WEED WIN?: The Blunt Realities of Cannabis Economics (UC Press; June 14, 2022), Goldstein and Sumner draw on a wealth of economic data and their experience working with industry and cannabis regulators to explain why many weed businesses and some aspects of legalization fail to measure up, while others occasionally get it right.

In Seattle I've visited 20 stores on 4/20 for 6 years in a row & I've noticed the 4/20 deals generally become the everyday low price at discount retailers approximately two years later.

Since 2017 I've noticed other various trends and anomalies including butdenter and customer favorites (they still prefer flower and prerolls tend to be the most popular amongst customers/tourists).
