For a longtime now I have been toying with the idea of posting videos focusing on material published in the retailer catalogs Marvel Previews & Previews. I haven't found the right format just yet but I did come across an issue that I thought was worthy of a video and might be confusing for new collectors.
Typically comic book retailers place their orders at least 6 weeks in advance of the titles hitting store shelves - upcoming titles are marketed to retail outlets through DC Connect, Marvel Previews and Previews Magazine - which release about 3-months before the titles are expected to hit store shelves.
In Marvel Previews #9 (May 2021) they solicit the first four issues of their next big event, Heroes Reborn 2. The title is shipping with about a million (sarcasm) variant covers each issue and while I was reading the options something stuck out at me..........
I suspect these "Brian Michael Bendis Trading Card" variant covers that are releasing for this series have good collector potential for several reasons. First, Bendis has some "name appeal" and there has been a lot of talk lately of Sports Card collectors looking into comic collecting as their market dwindles and comic brands continue to be adapted into big budget movies & series.
While looking at the variant cover previews I noticed that the "trading card" variants also appear to connect to create a 3x3 image similar to the same way that old Marvel cards did. This looked great in our card books as kids and I think it will resonate with people jumping to comics from the sports card world.....and here is the snag.
The "standard" issue covers appear to be a connecting image from artist Leinil Francis Yu and it looks like we will be getting "Action Figure" variants for the7 issues compliments of John Tyler Christopher. What really stood out to me though was the fact that issue one ships with TWO of the nine Bendis Trading Card variants. It took me a few minuted to understand what I was reading under issue ..
