At The Movies with Ebert & Roeper: 2-24-08
Richard Roeper and Guest Critic, Michael Phillips reviews "Vantage Point" (Implausible mess and preposterous thriller with a wasted cast of veteran actors like Dennis Quaid, Sigourney Weaver, the late, great William Hurt ("Eyewitness" reunion there), Forest Whitaker and even, Matthew Fox from "Lost" and "Party of Five" involved! The trailer gave away the twist, too! Sony should be the blame for their poor marketing.), "Diary of the Dead" (Legendary Producer, Writer, Director, George A. Romero's first attempt at using Zombie Horror film as a "Found Footage". It didn't work, too many brainless characters with poor acting skills, bitching and complaining at the cameraman! You actually feel bad for him recording it, it's not scary, too many shakiness and jump scares. This is the reason why I had my fuse boiling on "Found Footage/POV" films that I can't stand! The only thing that's impressive is the gory Zombie scenes and that's it! A major disappointment for Romero! I disagree with Phillips. I rather watch "Cloverfield" and "The Blair Witch Project" over this!), "Charlie Bartlett" (I miss Anton Yelchin and this is his great performance in a quirky coming-of-age comedy that I recently bought on DVD at "Dollar Tree" and I did record it on Showtime in 2009! Big disagreement on both Phillips and Roeper on this!), "Be Kind Rewind" (An underrated comedy/drama from Michel Gondry and Starring: Jack Black, Mos Def, Danny Glover and again, Sigourney Weaver in a thankless unpleasant role! I love it and it's not just about erasing VHS tapes and posing short mini parodies of popular films at a local video store! It's about caring, saving a building where a jazz legend was born there, facing demolition from high-end redevelopment! I saw it in theatres and later, bought the Blu-ray at what else? "Blockbuster Video" before it was ready to be shut down!) and "Taxi to the Dark Side".
New on Video: "30 Days of Night" (I have on Blu-ray and it's a scary vampire film! I disagree with Roeper.), "Goya's Ghosts" and "Death at a Funeral" (Original British Comedy from Director, Frank Oz that I love! Another disagreement with Roeper but I will agree with him on the dreadful remake, though!). Roeper's pick is "Beowulf" (Still need to find the Blu-ray of this film) and Phillips' pick is "The Darjeeling Limited".
