TLDR: I believe Etute used too much force to warrant self-defense but the jury disagrees. However, the defense never once brought up anything related to a 'gay panic defense' in their testimony, Etute's feelings were focused on by the prosecution. The mentioning of Virginia's new gay panic law was only for court procedural purposes, and only insofar as the jury was not instructed on the topic, and only because the law was not in effect at the time of the crime. But that's what everybody latched onto on social media because it makes for a really good headline and viral tweet.
