Jimi Hendrix - The Things I Used To Do
Newport Pop Festival - June 20th to 22nd 1969, held at 'Devonshire Downs' sometimes informally called The Downs, was a horse racing track and multipurpose event facility in Northridge, California. Three day event attended by about 200,000 people. https://www.djtees.com/blogs/djtees-blog/newport-69-devonshire-downs-northridge-california
Some context:
Jimi played on Friday the night of the 20th, I would disagree with this guys assessment (above link) of Hendrix's set as listless. They sounded pretty tight and rockin' to me (Fire) and there were some great moments (Are You Exoerienced), but the band was disgusted by the out of control crowd. You can hear Jimi's very funny comments about it too, especially before 'Hear My Train a Comin'. They played about 50 minutes and GTFO of Dodge.
These gigs are the only time (as far as I know) that Jimi had a Telecaster neck put on his Strat, there are a few pics of it floating around the Internet.
Hendrix was evidently disappointed in the entire Friday night shitshow and wanted to make it up somehow on Sunday, the last day of the festival. All the band's equipment was on a truck going to Denver for what turned out to be the last JHE gig ever. Thus the wall of borrowed Fender amps / cabs he was using on the Sunday 6/22 jam. I can tell you from experience no matter how much you turn up the volume of Fender amps (of that era) they will not distort, lol.... and Jimi has them all 'dimed." Too bad no one thought to borrow or rent a Marshall stack for Jimi to mix in with the Fenders. It would have been better to have some Marshall "grit" with all that Fender clean.
About this particular tune: an interesting jam of the old Guitar Slim tune 'The Things I Used To Do'.
To me, this is fascinating to listen to, Jimi the Field General, trying to tighten up a loose jam. The Gen. Patton, the leader, directing the troops. @1:25 it's draggin' a bit, and he says "C'mon" either to Buddy or Bob Arthur, or both of 'em. Telling them to pick up the tempo. @1:32 "Turn it up louder" I think this is directed at Bob Arthur, since you can hear his bass better after this. @1:43 "Tune it up, tune it up." He turned up his bass louder but he's out of tune, lol. Jimi telling him to tune it up. @2:14 Buddy with one of his wacky "out of leftfield" fills, which if you know Buddy Miles he tends to do at surprising times when you least expect it. @2:19 Jimi takes it in stride and his response is a trippy country-ish bent-string lick. (He did some variations on that lick, off-hand the only other time I remember him doing it was in 'Red House' from Portland in '68) @2:52 I call this the "fuck it," solo. I think Jimi is kinda frustrated at how it's going and is gonna let it all hang out here, so he goes into hyper-drive.
Anyway, that's my 2c.
