J&J tip of the day #4
You will not create a negative association with the crate for correcting your dog’s bad behavior while inside of it. We get so many dogs in for training that have never been crated at all. They will do anything to NOT go in the crate, and we have seen just about every behavior imaginable. They will put on the brakes, jump on the top of the kennel, try to bite us, etc, whatever it takes to not go in. Even once they’re in, we have seen dogs bark, whine, spin, bite the crate, try to break out of the crate, and anything else you can imagine. Establishing crate boundaries and manners is the first thing we do with new board and train dogs, and every single time we end up with the same result: a dog that loves its kennel, is calm in the kennel, and most certainly does not have a negative association with the kennel. How do we get this? By correcting the bad behavior. The dog WILL and does connect the punisher to its behavior, not the crate itself. So you can absolutely punish the dogs act of destructive or dangerous behavior, and the dog just learns to not do it anymore. They don’t think it’s the crate punishing them. Usually after the first 24 hours we have a dog that is calmly relaxing in the kennel watching the day-to-day action of the training center. Your dog can do this too, but first you must stop believing all the lies out there that are holding so many of you back. A crate trained dog is an absolute must in our program. It keeps them safe, calm, and gives them a sense of security in an already stressful world. Crate training your dog is one of the best things you can do for them.
