*VERY IMPORTANT NOTE* The SEA DART missile system was initially semi-active homing. An upgrade made it a 'more autonomous' active homing. Thus SEA DART was both Semi-active homing and Active homing in it's life time.
The HMS Sheffield (D80) was a Type 42 (Sheffield class) destroyer in the Royal Navy, commissioned in 1975. This warship was among the first of its class, designed primarily for area air-defense to protect carrier battle groups from aerial threats, including low-flying aircraft and anti-ship missiles.

Propulsion: It was powered by COGOG (Combined Gas or Gas) propulsion systems, consisting of two Rolls-Royce Olympus TM3B high-speed gas turbines for high-speed operations and two Rolls-Royce Tyne RM1A cruising gas turbines, generating a combined output of about 36,000 horsepower. This setup allowed the ship to operate more efficiently at different speed ranges, with a top speed of over 30 knots.
Armament: The primary armament of the HMS Sheffield included a twin Sea Dart missile launcher, capable of engaging aerial targets at long ranges. It also featured one 4.5-inch Mark 8 naval gun for surface targets, two 20 mm Oerlikon cannons, and two Phalanx CIWS (Close-In Weapon Systems) for last-minute defense against incoming missiles.
Electronics: The ship was equipped with a sophisticated suite of sensors and radars, including the Type 1022 long-range air search radar, Type 996 3D surveillance radar, and Type 909 fire control radar for the Sea Dart missiles. It also had sonar equipment for anti-submarine operations.

Classification and Localization: Once a contact is detected, it must be classified (distinguishing between submarine and non-submarine objects, such as schools of fish or sunken debris) and localized accurately. This process often involves analyzing the acoustic signature of the contact and using triangulation methods to pinpoint its position.
Tracking: Continuous monitoring of a submarine's position and movement is essential for threat assessment and engagement planning. This requires sustained sensor contact, often involving multiple assets to maintain a track on the target.
Engagement: If a submarine is deemed hostile, forces may be tasked to engage and neutralize the threat. This can be done using torpedoes, depth charges, or other specialized weapons like anti-submarine missiles, launched from ships, submarines, or aircraft.
Post-Engagement Assessment: After an engagement, assessment is necessary to determine if the threat has been neutralized or if further action is required. This may involve additional sonar searches and analysis of underwater sound to confirm the de..

The Type 054 frigate, also known as the Jiangkai class, is a class of multi-role frigates in the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) of China. They are designed for a variety of maritime roles, including air defense, anti-ship, anti-submarine warfare, and escort missions.
Design and Dimensions: The Type 054 has a sleek, modern design with stealth features to reduce radar cross-section. It typically displaces around 4,000 tons and measures about 134 meters in length, with a beam of 16 meters and a draft of about 5 meters.
Propulsion and Performance: These frigates are powered by a combined diesel and diesel (CODAD) propulsion system, which usually includes four Shaanxi diesel engines. This setup provides a good balance between speed and endurance, allowing the ships to reach speeds of around 27 knots and a range of approximately 8,000 nautical miles at 15 knots.
Armament: The Type 054 is well-armed for a variety of missions. Its primary armament typically includes a 76 mm main gun, two to four 30 mm close-in weapon systems (CIWS), and a vertical launching system (VLS) for surface-to-air missiles (SAMs). Anti-ship missiles and anti-submarine torpedoes are also part of its arsenal. The exact configuration can vary between ships.
Electronics and Sensors: The frigate is equipped with advanced sensors and electronic warfare systems. This includes surface search radars, fire-control radars, sonar systems, and electronic countermeasure systems. These systems enhance its capabilities in detecting and engaging threats.
Air Defense Capabilities: The Type 054's air defense capabilities are highlighted by its vertical launch system, which is typically armed with HHQ-16 medium-range SAMs. This system provides the frigate with a capable air defense umbrella against a variety of aerial threats.
Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW): For ASW missions, the frigate is equipped with bow sonar and variable depth sonar. It can deploy anti-submarine torpedoes and has a flight deck and ha..
