Today we are joined by Jill Stein. She’s a Harvard-educated doctor turned environmental health advocate. Back in the 90s, Jill began connecting the dots between toxic exposures and illness … and he's not stopped since. She’s helped combat environmental injustice and racism as well push for a cleaner, greener world. Jill first ran for the oval office in 2012. She became the first green party presidential candidate to qualify for public financing. The 2024 election will be Jill’s third time running for president. Her platform supports progressive ideas, like securing an Economic Bill of Rights as well as a Green New Deal. FACT #22: Who was First Lady Rachel Jackson?
Rachel Jackson broke the mold for First Ladies, as she was also the first one to have been divorced.
When Rachel was 18 she married Lewis Robbards. After three years of marriage, they separated. She soon met a young lawyer named Andrew Jackson who was renting a room at her mother’s house.
Rachel and Andrew got married before realizing Rachel’s first husband never finished the divorce proceedings. The court granted a divroce, finding Rachel guilty of adultery and abandonment. The couple remarried to clear up any discrepancies but it would catch up with them later down the road.
Andrew’s political career would take off, allowing her to be the wife of a Representative, Senator, and Tennessee Supreme Court Justice. However, all the scrutiny and judgment about Rachel’s background caused her to recoil from most public events
Andrew ran for president in 1824. Rachel’s reputation was obliterated. She was accused of being a bigamist, adulterer, and a whore. There was also a rumor that the couple lived together before marriage.
The election was contingent. It ended up being decided by Congress and resulted in Andrew’s defeat. He would run again for president in 1828 with Rachel by his side.
Andrew won the second time, however, Rachel would never become First Lady. She died of a heart attack 3 months before his inauguration. Andrew was distraught and blamed those who criticized her background for her death.
On her tombstone, he engraved “a being so gentle and so virtuous, slander might wound but could not dishonor.” He missed his wife dearly. While president, he wrote to a friend saying, “my heart is nearly broke. I try to summon up my usual fortitude but it is in vain.”

FACT #21: Birth Control Was Once Illegal in the U.S.
In 1873, Congress passed the Comstock Act which made providing birth control devices or information through the mail illegal. A lot of other states jumped on the bandwagon and also outlawed advertisement, sale, and distribution.
In 1916, New York prosecuted and sentenced Margaret Sanger to 30 days in jail for opening the first birth control clinic in the country. After failing to get Congress to repeal the Comstock act, she challenged the law by mailing a birth control device to a doctor. The stunt proved successful and the court deemed it okay if it helped a doctor’s patients.
In 1952, she opened the American Birth Control League, which would eventually become Planned Parenthood. She partnered with a doctor and helped develop the very first birth control pill.
While many states had reversed course and legalized birth control by the 60’s, many of them still prohibited circulation information on birth control. Some states outlawed possession of birth control.
That all changed in 1965 with Griswold v. Connecticut. The court ruled that the state’s prohibition of birth control was unconstitutional as it violated one’s privacy. Although a breakthrough, this only applied to married couples.
In 1971, Congress repealed major parts of the Comstock act. The next year, the Supreme Court ruled in Eisenstadt v. Baird that if privacy was a right, it applied to both married and unmarried couples.
Today, nearly 13% of women aged 15-49 use the birth control pill.

Fact #19: Who was First Lady Louisa Catherine Johnson Adams
Louisa Catherine Adams was the first First Lady to be born outside of the United States. In fact, she didn’t move to America until four years after marrying John Quincy Adams.
Before becoming first lady, she was a diplomat’s wife. While she was charming and classy, she was also full of grit. She moved to Russia with her 2 year old son to be with her husband. The environment was harsh, she was in poor health and had little money. While there she gave birth to a daughter who died before her second birthday.
When her husband was sent to London, Louisa set off to join him. With her young son, she took off on a 40 day trek across war torn Europe.
Her husband would fail to win re-election. However, Louisa would remain a public figure. John would run for Congress and win and spend the next 17 years of his life serving his country.
Louisa and John were both ardent supporters of abolition. In fact, Louisa helped her sort through petitions he was sent on slavery. She also was a supporter of women’s rights and even linked the plight of women to that of slaves to further the cause of both.
She received a lot of criticism for being from England. Louisa was perceived as royalty and snobby. The mud slinging was so bad she made a direct response to some of the allegations - making it the first time a woman would respond directly to false stories in the national media.
John would die from a stroke on the floor of Congress. Louisa made it in time to see him just before he passed. She spent the rest of her life defending his record and reputation and writing several autobiographies.
