Needed a real workbench in my shop so I made a bench similar to my grandfather's bench and added a lot of optimizations.

Oh yea, we cut the boards we needed on our antique sawmill.

Ingredients:
water oak, red oak, white oak, hickory, white pine, yellow pine, cedar, mesquite, & walnut. Sweat. Blood. Epoxy. Glue. Dowels. Screws. Vinegar. Mineral spirits. Varnish. Boiled linseed oil. Pixels. Ether.

We could hear the generator almost failing during a power outage. This video is an investigation of the root cause.

A little too big for the mill, so we show you the work arounds! This video is another log off of the dead water oak ( and the last log ).

We decided to take a look inside the oak we fell in the last video. The oak made some nice boards and the buzzsaw made quick firewood. But some of the rounds were 3' so had to take them to my 3 point bush hog splitter powered by 1982 Ford 1910.

Saturday work chore in dropping a water oak that has been littering our hay field for a year. Got 2 sawmill logs and some good 16" oak firewood later. We didn't know if it was hollow inside so the danger factor was high.

We burned out our down draft retort. Down draft means the gases that are forced out of the wood to convert to charcoal leave the retort at the bottom of the barrel. This makes for clean equipment since the tar that is produced is burned away.

The inner barrel is replaced and viewer comments are incorporated in the new design.

Using the new charcoal we make a kitchen shelf out of a hog panel.

Found a nice walnut log to mill into boards. Cameragirl is cooking garden vegetables in the kitchen. Coyotes are running around and screaming!

This is the second video. In this episode we go to the bottom of the square well. We believe the well is near Trammels Trace trail.

We run a camera downhole to inspect the debris at the bottom.

Then we run a large magnet and bump bottom.

The 1908 clam shell auger is lowered and with 2 turns to the right, it retrieves material that is dumped out for inspection at the surface.

We end the video with a permanent well house sitting on top of the well.

Use 2 split pieces of water oak, 3% vs 35% moisture. 3 hour test in 5 minutes of video.

Bought a trailer off of marketplace. Milled some white oak boards for the deck. Put on new tires and test drove it.

We needed to cover an old square dug well for safety's sake on our ranch. So we built a well house out of oil field pipe & covered it with used barn tin. Refurbished a 1908 clam shell digger that is lowered to the bottom of the well. We intend to recover about a foot of fill to see if there is anything interesting left at the bottom by earlier settlers on the ranch. Used the antique sawmill to mill some sweetgum timbers for a floor to work on at the well. We believe the well is near Trammels Trace trail.

In Episode 2 we clean up the blade and then install and test it.

Episode 3 will be the saw doctor diagnosing the blade to remedy the problems. And then install and test. (That is if I can get him to agree to the video!)

In this episode we prepare the antique mill and blade for a wider cut. The sawmill wants a machinist to fit a 48" circle blade to the arbor. In the machine shop we use a lathe to mill an insert for the blade.

Then we go to the sawmill to modify the hardware to accept the new larger blade.

We found an oak in the dirt and decided to rescue it! This video shows the shave horse as its being built out of white oak. There is no metal or glue used other than some epoxy around the legs to stabilize the wood.

We decided to go with a German or Swiss design because my grandfather was German (Seelbach).

Our grandson loves to climb around on it and even tried to use it.

The pin that serves as the pivot is a textile spool rod.

Remove grip and wooden forestock replace with police set synthetic. Homemade barrel nut wrench using an old shovel.

We had a 100' water oak in distress so we decided to take it down before it fell on some structures. Near the root flare, it was 3’ diameter.

There was mistletoe and woodpeckers having a party.

Started cutting up firewood and found ants had tunneled for about 50 feet of the trunk. In the voids, ants were everywhere. After exposing their home, we video them busy cleaning up the mess!

Here is the video of the oak being dismembered:

Rocking S Ranch in east Texas had a very large red oak die located in a valley on the ranch. Cut the only straight section to 8.5 feet. Hauled to our antique sawmill that is powered by 1964 Case wheel tractor model 530. 1.5 years later, milled into 1" boards. Hauled boards back to shop on a 1953 Chevy 4100 1.5 ton dump bed pickup.

We found a white tree pushed up in the dirt by the timber loggers. We haul it to our antique sawmill and make boards, sticker and strap them. Show some freshly picked buckeyes and a possible white oak mantel from the top of the tree.

We fabricated an active wedge to split fatwood kindling a little safer than compared to using our axe. Tested on pine knot with plenty of knots and also took it to the anvil to split metal.

We test the flammability of the pine knot. Finally we show an entire tree that is fatwood.

Johnny had a cedar post from a barn tear down. He cut it in half and milled the upper log with a chainsaw. He mad a porch slider swing out of the lumber. The lower log had rebar in it. It was removed and milled in to lumber on our antique circular saw.

We harvest some musclewood from our trails near the creeks. Take it to the buzzsaw and process it down to lump charcoal size. Then we carbonize it in our double barrel charcoal retort.

We found a large bitternut hickory that was damaged above its root flare. This allowed termites to invade. We harvested the log, made some lumber on our antique sawmill, and cut the remaining flitches on the buzzsaw. The other logs we split using a bushog wood splitter on the old tractor. Camera girl finds a coral snake in the woods, some buckeyes and morning glories.

Needed a table at the sawmill for lunch breaks. So the Grumpy Machinist called and offered a free cookie if we cut a large red oak up for him (really?). Wax was applied to the cookie and it was 2 months old at the time of this production.

This video is every step except one to cut up 2 7/8" OD oilfield pipe for the legs, cut pocket holes into the bottom of the cookie, attach and weld together, wrap a chain around the every changing green cookie and apply tung oil. Made a tractor compatible lifting eye because it weighs 200 lbs (91 kg).

The missing corrupted video step is the additional 2 9/16" hole saw cut that widened the pocket hole kerf.

Will probably do a follow up video of deep pour epoxy to seal up cracks.

We have small ranch in Texas where we grow trees and vegetables. We also use a tractor, charcoal forge, charcoal retort, and a antique sawmill. Our videos show how we do different projects on a farm.
