Quail Non-Caged, Organic & How to Free-range
Charting the progress I made and the difficulties encountered raising quail naturally with a bantam hen and with the end goal of getting these quail chicks to grow up to sit and raise their own chicks.
This is the first part of a three part film taking you through the first few days of life of the baby quail with their mother bantam Ardenner, Polly, sharing information I have gleaned over the 15 years I have been observing these delightful birds. The written version is here: http://holistic-hen.blogspot.fr/2012/... I began raising organic quail to obtain quality eggs with which to treat Andy's hay fever and eczema, which they did and very quickly. I still keep quail today, they are part of our garden, living in our greenhouses and coldframes keeping down insect pests, just enjoying life and laying delicious eggs. This is one of my older films but I am having such trouble with uploading to BitChute re upload speeds that I'm having to rely on my older and non HD videos.

Some of the first quail I ever raised back in 2000, initially to obtain therapeutic-grade eggs with which to treat Andy's hay fever. The Pharaoh is, in my experience a meticulous forager, a great helpmate in the garden and a prime candidate for free-ranging. Its plumage being flecked black and brown, coupled with striped cream markings, significantly help to break-up its outline. In saving Andy from the misery of allergies, including eczema, they have a special place in our hearts and we have gone on to keep quail ever since. The Golden quail have been instrumental in making my dreams come true, for a coturnix to raise her own chicks. My understanding is that the Golden quail I have belong to the two main types of 'Golds', which in English are known as the Italian and the Manchurian. However, some breeders insist that these are alternate names for the same golden bird! Whatever your belief, there are nuances due to patterns and markings, so the Italian can be subdivided into the Italian Gold and the Italian Speckled. In French and Spanish these quail are known as the Isabelle/Isobel/Isabela for reasons explained in the film. Equally important, is the vexed question of genetics in the golden colouring of fur and feathers; i.e. the yellow allele, which is lethal when homozygous. The English White has even less written about it than my two previous colours, except of course for the Texas A&M Jumbo version, which is very well documented. I still hoping some day to come across a good reference book on the subject but until then I'm going to discuss personality and behaviour, which is actually probably more of interest. The Whites and the Pandas are wonderful little birds, sometimes rather shy and less 'pushy' than the Golds, particularly when it comes to nesting. However, they bond well with other birds and particularly well with humans, making great gardening companions and brilliant pets. Despite their high visibility, they are great free-rangers and foragers, so you'll need to keep an eye on them, if you take them out where there are predators.

Thanks to Lucusgonze at Freesound for his nostalgic rendition of 'There's No Place Like Home'. The arrangement, for guitar and mandolin, is from the June 1st, 1898 edition of S. S. Stewart's 'Banjo and Guitar Journal'.
After many experiments with environments, I finally come to the conclusion that our mealworms should live as we and our poultry do - in their own forest garden. Beetles are scavengers and seem very at home on the forest floor surrounded by all kinds of debris and greenery - dry leaves, mosses, moulds and fungi to name but a few.

Organic and free-range quail? Yes it is possible! Sharing tips and strategies. These two were tame enough to be taking on a gardening job with me. The male was frightened by a jackdaw's cry but the female stayed with me all the time except when she took a break in the shade. This is a bonded pair, otherwise I would suggest free-ranging quail on a one-to-one basis as incidents like stray dogs or cats can happen.
