Best Illumination in Tokyo - Christmas Lights

Are you making plans to travel to Japan in December? I went on a quest to find the best Christmas lights in Tokyo to help you plan your trip.

There were a few requirements:
1. They have to be free
2. They have to be easily accessible to public transportation; and
3. They have to be fun!

Tokyo is really the perfect city for couples.
There are more date spots than chances to go on a date.
Restaurants, bars, clubs, live music, and at Christmastime, illumination!

So I set out to find the best places to take a walk through winter wonderland.
And I’m going to pair them up because you can actually visit some of them on the same night.

Omote Sando (表参道) is one of the best spots for Christmas lights in Tokyo. With over 900,000 lights, this upscale shopping street the perfect date spot. The street is lit up until December 26, so make sure to get there before it’s too late.

Keyakizaka is one of the best places to enjoy illumination in Tokyo at Christmastime. It's the perfect date spot because there are several restaurants in the area to suit all budgets. Looking down Keyakizaka, you can see Tokyo Tower. The bridge between the main development and the Roppongi Hill high end residences is the best spot for photos, and there are markers along the street that let visitors know the best photo spots.

Roppongi Midtown (六本木ミッドタウン) is a shopping center, office building, and home to the Ritz Carlton. It was completed in March 2007.

Illumination will run from November 11 to December 25, 2022.

Ebisu Garden Place is just a few minutes from Ebisu station on foot. Ebisu is also written Yebisu (the “Y” is silent). There is a walkway with a people mover that links the station to Ebisu Garden Place.

Ebisu Garden Tower, has a large office tower, residential towers, the Westin Tokyo Hotel, two museums and lots of high-end shops and restaurants. The 5m x 3m Baccarat crystal chandelier, which is said to be one of the biggest Chandaria in the world is decorated with over 8,000 crystals and 250 lights. The European style Christmas market will be there from 11 am until 11 pm from November 12 to January 9.

The roof of the Miyashita Park complex will be lit up in bright purple from November 12th to December 25th. Why purple? The #LOVEPURPLE theme is to promote awareness of violence against women. Note that the rooftop closes at 10PM, and events are subject to weather conditions.

Mohri Garden in Roppongi Hills (a five-minute walk from Roppongi subway station on Oedo or Hibiya Lines) has a pond, a waterfall, and lush greenery. It’s a great place to view cherry blossoms in the spring. The illumination runs from November 18 until December 25th, from around 5pm – 11pm each night (weather permitting).

Shibuya Blue Cave is an 800m display of 600,000 LEDs stretching between Shibuya Koen Dori and Yoyogi Park (just south of Yoyogi Park Events Square). As always, events are subject to weather conditions.

Marunouchi Nakadori is near Tokyo station and the Imperial Palace is the perfect place for a romantic stroll and lots of selfies. During the day, Nakadori is bustling with shoppers visiting the over 900 shops that grace the street. There are restaurants, coffee shops, and high end boutiques. Above the street-level shops are financial institutions and law firms.

In December, Nakadori turns into a winter wonderland, with hundreds of trees all lit up with beautiful lights.
