Not an edit. This is the (shorter) single version of the song. The song is a portrait of a poor-born girl who becomes a member of the European jet set. The song topped the charts in 14 countries. #60 in the USA. It was also awarded the 1970 Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically.
The song was not originally intended to be a single. Peter: "I wanted to write a long, extended piece because I was working in folk clubs and universities, and Al Stewart had something that was half an hour long and Bob Dylan's "Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands" took a whole side of an album. "Where Do You Go To My Lovely" was my first attempt at writing something longer than my normal three minutes. It was amazingly easy to write, but I knew what I wanted to say. I wanted to say something about this particular person, although it wasn't about anyone specific."
WHERE DO YOU GO TO (MY LOVELY)
(Peter Sarstedt)
you talk like Marlene Dietrich and you dance like Zizi Jeanmaire
your clothes are all made by Balmain
and there's diamonds and pearls in your hair, yes there are
you live in a fancy apartment off the Boulevard St. Michel
where you keep your Rolling Stones records
and a friend of Sacha Distel, 'yes you do
» not on the single version:
» (you go to the embassy parties where you talk in Russian and Greek
» and the young men who move in your circles
» they hang on every word you speak, yes they do)
but where do you go to my lovely, when you're alone in your bed
tell me the thoughts that surround you I want to look inside your head, yes I do
I've seen all your qualifications, you got from the Sorbonne
and the painting you stole from Picasso
your loveliness goes on and on, yes it does
'when you go on your summer vacation, you go to Juan-les-Pines
with your carefully designed topless swimsuit
you get an even suntan on your back and on your legs
and when the snow falls, you're found in St. Moritz 'with the others of the jet-set
and you sip your Napoleon Brandy but you never get your lips wet, no you don't
but where do you go to my lovely, when you're alone in your bed
'won't you tell me the thoughts that surround you, I want to look inside your head, yes I do
» not on the single version:
» (you're in between 20 and 30, a very desirable age
» your body is firm and inviting, 'but you live on a glittering stage, yes you do, yes you do)
your name, it is heard in high places, you know the Aga Khan
he sent you a racehorse for Christmas and you keep it, just for fun, for a laugh aha-ha-ha
they say that when you get married, it'll be to a millionaire
'but they don't realize where you came from
and I wonder if they really care, or give a damn
where do you go to my lovely, when you're alone in your bed?
tell me the thoughts that surround you, I want to look inside your head, yes I do
I remember the back streets of Naples, two children begging in rags
both touched with a burning ambition, to

Recorded August 3 - 11, 1966, released on "Between the Buttons" in February of 1967. The album cover photo was taken in the misty dawn of Primrose hill, London, winter 1966.

MY OBSESSION
(Jagger/Richards)
my obsession
your possessions
every piece that I can get
my obsessions are
your possessions
my mouth is soaking wet
I think I blew it now, confession
can't dodge it, it's simple logic
you'd be better off with me and you'll know it
when you lost it, lonely
my obsession are
your possesion
are you smiling on my way
my obsession are
your possession
one that you should give away
give it to me now i've no objection
I don't mind if it's unkind
and it's not my property
but I want it just to be mine, exclusively
oooh baby, ooh baby
oooh baby, oooh baby
oooh baby, oooh baby
oooh baby, oooh baby
aaahhhh
you need teaching you're a girl
there are things in this world
that need teaching with discretion, my profession
my obsessions are
your possessions
are you used to the idea
my obsessions are
your possessions
do you feel at home right here
you should relax it's my impression
didn't see you were so young
I could almost be your son
please turn in my direction, no objection

Edit for headphones. This is my attempt to get the stereo album version sound single-ish by means of a phase effect. From the album "Picturesque Matchstickable Messages From The Status Quo" (deluxe edition)(remaster). The single was released in November 1968, but withdrawn in the UK. Though for several weeks in the Dutch tip parade (a pre charts thing) it didn't reach the charts in Holland, nor anywhere on earth. Strange, for I like it very very much.
Here is real great - dubbed - "live" video with my edit in it, on the channel of Omegaman69:
https://youtu.be/WJSttZS4iEM
Status Quo are a British rock group who are best known in home country for their heads-down twelve-bar boogie rock which they have played since the 1970s. They enjoyed 22 Top 10 hits in the UK between 1968 and 1990, including one chart-topper in 1974's "Down Down." Their biggest American hit was the psychedelic "Pictures Of Matchstick Men," which reached #12 in 1968.
TECHNICOLOR DREAMS
(Anthony King)*
I see your face at the dawn of the day, gold as the sun begins to shine
I see your face now at the end of the day, purple shadows dancing in your eyes.
Technicolour dreams are all I see
Technicolour dreams of you and me
I see your shadow tripping through a silver glade, tiptoeing over crimson sand
Luring me onwards into a sea of jade, leading me gently by the hand
Technicolour dreams are all I see
Technicolour dreams of you and me
If I could escape through the windows of my mind
I would fly to your magic mountain land
There we would stay 'til the world had passed away
With a love only we could understand
Technicolour dreams are all I see
Technicolour dreams of you and me
I see your face at the dawn of the day, gold as the sun begins to shine
I see your face now at the end of the day, purple shadows dancing in your eyes

ROLL OVER BEETHOVEN
(Chuck Berry - 1956 hit single)
I'm gonna write a little letter,
gonna mail it to my local DJ.
It's a rockin' rhythm record
I want my jockey to play.
Roll Over Beethoven, I gotta hear it again today.
You know, my temperature's risin'
and the jukebox blows a fuse.
My heart's beatin' rhythm
and my soul keeps on singin' the blues.
Roll Over Beethoven and tell Tschaikowsky the news.
I got the rockin' pneumonia,
I need a shot of rhythm and blues.
I think I'm rollin' arthiritis
sittin' down by the rhythm review.
Roll Over Beethoven rockin' in two by two.
Well, if you feel you like it
go get your lover, then reel and rock it.
Roll it over and move on up just
a trifle further and reel and rock it,
roll it over,
Roll Over Beethoven rockin' in two by two.
Well, early in the mornin' I'm a-givin' you a warnin'
don't you step on my blue suede shoes.
Hey diddle diddle, I am playin' my fiddle,
ain't got nothin' to lose.
Roll Over Beethoven and tell Tschaikowsky the news.
You know she wiggles like a glow worm,
dance like a spinnin' top.
She got a crazy partner,
oughta see 'em reel and rock.
Long as she got a dime the music will never stop.
Roll Over Beethoven,
Roll Over Beethoven,
Roll Over Beethoven,
Roll Over Beethoven,
Roll Over Beethoven and dig these rhythm and blues!

Edit for headphones, December 2021. I know three versions of this song. I like this version the best, I call it the delicate version; it is on cd two — entitled "Topanga 1 (1968-1969)" — of the eight cd box set "Neil Young Archives Vol. 1 (1963-1972)". A mono version of "Birds" is on cd four, entitled "Topanga 2 (1969-1970)". The best known version probably is the one on the album "After The Gold Rush".
I especially like Neil's tender voice & the change in rhythm during the lines "and show you the way to go" that is not or hardly noticable on the "Gold Rush" version.
I think this song very much relates to the John Sebastian song "You Go Your Way And I'll Go Mine", another song — I think — about divorce. Neil Young's mono version on cd four is much shorter (99 seconds), it ends after the first two verses with the lines "it's over" "it's over", emphasizing the feeling of loneliness...
BIRDS
(Neil Young)
lover there will be another one
who'll hover over you beneath the sun
tomorrow see the things that never come
today
when you see me
fly away without you
shadow on the things you know
feathers fall around you
and show you the way to go
it's over
it's over
nestled in your wings my little one
is special morning brings another sun
tomorrow see the things that never come
today
when you see me
fly away without you
shadow on the things you know
feathers fall around you
and show you the way to go
it's over
it's over

Edit (live rsg) for headphones. Live on British music tv show "Ready, Steady, Go!" Friday, September 2, 1965. The first and the last verse were omitted to please the retarded British studio suits, with their impatient narrow minded empty heads... for if a song that lasts 129 seconds is considered too long, then you definitely have lost contact with reality... *
The song was recorded November 2 & 3, 1964 and released in the US on February 12, 1965 on the album "The Rolling Stones, Now!" In the UK September 24, 1965 on "Out Of Our Heads".
Electric guitar & piano: Brian Jones. Vocals: Mick Jagger. Electric guitar: Keith Richards. Bass: Bill Wyman. Drums: Charlie Watts.
OH BABY (WE GOT A GOOD THING GOIN')(short tv version)
(Barbara Lynn Ozen) **
they may talk all about me
and scandalize my name, oh no
but deep down inside me, baby
I know I'm the only man
so don't worry 'bout me baby
'cause I'm right here at home
oh baby, oh baby, we got a good thing goin'
so maybe I knew her, once upon a time
but that's all in the past babe
baby let me know you're mine, all mine, all mine
no matter how she wants me
I'm not going nowhere, oh no
I'm gonna stick right here, babe
I know how much you care
so don't worry 'bout me baby
'cause I'm right here at home
oh baby, oh baby, we got a good thing goin'

Edit for headphones of the mono single version. Wider sound, more bass.
The edit is made from the mono single version of the cd "The Fortunes - The Singles" (1999) which holds a far better version than the mellow slimy stereo remake that is all over the web.
This song was their seventh single and a 1966 UK no 15 hit and a Dutch no 8 hit.
Sung by The Fortunes, music by session musicians...
THIS GOLDEN RING
(Roger Greenaway and Roger Cook)
This golden ring's gonna buy me
A place in my baby's heart
This golden ring's gonna make
Quite sure that we never part
It's so funny what a ring can do
Make a girl just like you
Take a ride downtown
Searching for a wedding gown
So I got a ring for my baby
And I think that very soon that maybe
That girl will be mine
Gonna have an angel divine
And everything is gonna be fine, so fine
This golden ring is all I have
To give to you
But given time and love
I'll make your dreams come true
I've been a-sitting on my money
I've been a-working hard girl
Only with you on my mind
We got more than money
We got a love that's gonna last us
It's so funny what a ring can do
Make a girl just like you
Take a ride downtown
Searching for a wedding gown
So I got a ring for my baby
And I think that very soon that maybe
That girl will be mine
Gonna have an angel divine
And everything is gonna be fine, so fine
Fine...

the hyde park concert of 1969, that I then recorded with a microphone straight from Dutch television, while my parents were watching too... old folks, ahead of their time... or just tolerant... (bad humming noise from tv by the way, I lost the tape years ago)
Edit for headphones, July 2021, an edit to show how bass distortion sounds... sorry, couldn't resist messing this song up with a lot of bass. A real great song from the 1967 album "Buffalo Springfield Again" that didn't need any editing, it is a very well done mix, so: sorry.
A "real huge" charts hit in 1968: wow, #98 on the USA Billboard Hot 100. Did you ever get YOUR song that high? Producer Jack Nitzsche (who also contributed to the album "Harvest") played electric piano and also provided the orchestral arrangement featuring a string section plus an oboe. So it is a true Jack Nitzsche work of art too. I think this song is a masterpiece.
By the time Buffalo Springfield came to record their second album "Buffalo Springfield Again" they were less a group than a collection of individuals. Neil Young wrote and recorded this song with the 'Wrecking Crew': Carol Kaye on bass, Russ Tillman on rhythm, Hal Blaine on drums and Don Randi on piano.
EXPECTING TO FLY
(Neil Young)
there you stood on the edge of your feather
expecting to fly
while I laughed, I wondered whether
I could wave goodbye
knowin' that you'd gone
by the summer it was healing
we had said goodbye
all the years we'd spent with feeling
ended with a cry
babe, ended with a cry
babe, ended with a cry
I tried so hard to stand
as I stumbled and fell to the ground
so hard to laugh as I fumbled
and reached for the love I found
knowin' it was gone
if I ever lived without you
now you know I'd die
if I ever said I loved you
now you know I'd try
babe, now you know I'd try
babe, now you know I'd try
babe

SITTIN' ON A FENCE
(Jagger/Richards)
since I was young I've been very hard to please
and I don't know wrong from right
but there is one thing I could never understand
some of the sick things that a girl does to a man, so
I'm just sittin' on a fence
a'you can say I got no sense
trying to make up my mind really is too horrifying
so I'm sittin on a fence
all of my friends at school grew up and settled down
and they mortgaged up their lives
one thing's not said too much, but I think it's true
they just get married cause there's nothing else to do, so
I'm just sittin' on a fence
a'you can say I got no sense
trying to make up my mind really is too horrifying
so I'm sittin on a fence
I'm just sittin' on a fence
a'you can say I got no sense
trying to make up my mind really is too horrifying
so I'm sittin on a fence
the day can come when you get old and sick and tired of life
you just never realize
maybe the choice you made wasn't really right
but you go out and you don't come back at night, so
I'm just sittin' on a fence
a'you can say I got no sense
trying to make up my mind really is too horrifying
so I'm sittin on a fence

Edit for headphones. Source of the edit is the song on the 1969 album "Barabajagal" (2005 EMI Remaster).
This song was the a-side to "Atlantis" in the USA, where it charted #7 most likely because of all that was going on concerning the Vietnam war.
TO SUSAN ON THE WEST COAST WAITING
(Donovan Leitch)
dear Susan,I know, you love me so
but I want to hear, it in my ear
you know I'd be there, working at my craft
had it not been, for the draft
dry up your tear, and feel no fear
you're here with me, like I'm there with you
to Susan on the West Coast waiting
from Andy in Vietnam fighting
to Susan on the West Coast waiting
from Andy in Vietnam fighting
I'm writing a note, beneath a tree
the smell of the rain, on the greenery
our fathers have painfully lost their way
that's why my love, I'm here today
hear me when I say, there will come a day
when Kings will know and love can grow
to Susan on the West Coast waiting
from Andy in Vietnam fighting
to Susan on the West Coast waiting
from Andy in Vietnam fighting
to Susan on the West Coast waiting
from Andy in Vietnam fighting
to Susan on the West Coast waiting
from Andy in Vietnam fighting
Susan, I know, you love me so
but I'd like to hear, it in my ear
you know I'd be there, working at my craft
had it not been, for the draft
dry up your tear, and feel no fear
you're here with me like I'm there with you
to Susan on the West Coast waiting
from Andy in Vietnam fighting
to Susan on the West Coast waiting
from Andy in Vietnam fighting
to Susan on the West Coast waiting
from Andy supposedly hating
to Susan on the West Coast waiting
from Andy in Vietnam fighting
Note:
Now we're on Vietnam:
I saw a documentary about Indonesia and the Japan nuclear bombing.
Between 129,000 and 226,000 people were killed, says Wikipedia.
In the documentary it was stated that the Japanese emperial command had decided to give the order to kill all prisoners in the concentration camps.
In Indonesia over a hundred thousand people would have been murdered if this command would have reached the Japanese army there.
Due to the nuclear bombing this horrible war crime was never committed...
The command never reached the forces abroad...
Gives a different insight...

Edit for headphones, March 2021. Source file of this edit is on cd 3 of the 3 cd set "The Kinks Remastered" (cat.nr. ESB CD 268). In 1970 "Apeman" charted nr.5 in the UK, Germany, Australia and New Zealand. Nr.9 in Holland, nr.10 in Ireland, nr.19 in Canada. And nr.45 in the US.
A pssible reason why it charted so low in the US: in the lyrics "...the air pollution is a-foggin' up my eyes...", the word "a-foggin'" sounded too much like "a-fucking'". Ray Davies had to fly back to London to re-record this line, dubbing over with a more clear "a-foggin'" prior to its single release, in turn causing a delay in the US single release of the song. The original lyric remains intact on the album, and is heard at 2:21.
How sick can one American be?
APEMAN
(Ray Davies)
I think I'm sophisticated
'Cause I'm living my life
Like a good homo sapiens
But all around me
Everybody's multiplying
And they're walking round like flies, man
So I'm no better than the animals
Sitting in the cages in the zoo, man
'Cause compared to the flowers
And the birds and the trees
I am an apeman
I think I'm so educated
And I'm so civilized
'Cause I'm a strict vegetarian
And with the over population
And inflation and starvation
And the crazy politicians
I don't feel safe in this world no more
I don't want to die in a nuclear war
I want to sail away to a distant shore
And make like an apeman
I'm an apeman
I'm an ape, apeman
Oh, I'm an apeman
I'm a king-kong man
I'm a voodoo man
Oh, I'm an apeman
'Cause compared to the sun that sits in the sky
Compared to the clouds as they roll by
Compared to the bugs and the spiders and flies
I am an apeman
La la la la la la la
In man's evolution
He's created the city
And the motor traffic rumble
But give me half a chance
And I'd be taking off my clothes
And living in the jungle
'Cause the only time that I feel at ease
Is swinging up and down in a coconut tree
Oh what a life of luxury
To be like an apeman
I'm an apeman
I'm an ape, apeman
Oh, I'm an apeman
I'm a king-kong man
I'm a voodoo man
Oh, I'm an apeman
I look out the window
But I can't see the sky
The air pollution is a-fogging up my eyes
I want to get out of this city alive
And make like an apeman
La la la la la la la
Come on and love me
Be my apeman girl
And we'd be so happy
In my apeman world
I'm an apeman
I'm an ape, apeman
Oh, I'm an apeman
I'm a king-kong man
I'm a voodoo man
Oh, I'm an apeman
I'll be your Tarzan and you'll be my Jane
I'll keep you warm and you'll keep me sane
We'll sit in the trees and eat bananas all day
Just like an apeman
I'm an apeman
I'm an ape, apeman
Oh, I'm an apeman
I'm a king-kong man
I'm a voodoo man
Oh, I'm an apeman
I don't feel safe in this world no more
I don't want to die in a nuclear war
I want to sail away to a distant shore
And make like an apeman

19TH NERVOUS BREAKDOWN
(Jagger/Richards)
you're the kind of person
you meet at certain dismal dull affairs.
center of a crowd, talking much too loud
running up and down the stairs.
well, it seems to me that you have seen too much in too few years.
and though you've tried you just can't hide
your eyes are edged with tears.
you better stop
look around
here it comes, here it comes, here it comes, here it comes
here comes your nine-teenth nervous breakdown.
when you were a child
you were treated kind
but you were never brought up right.
you were always spoiled with a thousand toys
but still you cried all night.
your mother who neglected you
owes a million dollars tax.
and your father's still perfecting ways of making sealing wax.
you better stop, look around
here it comes, here it comes, here it comes, here it comes
here comes your nilne-teenth nervous breakdown.
oh, who's to blame, that girl's just insane.
well nothing I do don't seem to work,
it only seems to make matters worse. Oh please.
you were still in school
when you had that fool
who really messed your mind.
and after that you turned your back
on treating people kind.
on our first trip
I tried so hard to rearrange your mind.
but after while I realized you were disarranging mine.
you better stop, look around
here it comes, here it comes, here it comes, here it comes
here comes your nine-teenth nervous breakdown.
here comes your nine-teenth nervous breakdown
here comes your nine-teenth nervous breakdown
Edit for headphones. Bee Gees 1997 concert in the MGM Grand in Las Vegas featuring Céline Dion.
Boy oh girl, what a performance... if you have any chance, buy this dvd, it is beautiful.
"Immortality" was composed especially for Céline Dion by Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb.
The Bee Gees brothers Gibb were born on the Isle of Man, emigrated to Australia in 1958, moved back to England in 1967 when they had their first big hit "Spicks And Specks" in New Zealand (nr.1), Australia (nr.5), Germany (nr.28) and that lovely little big country of mine called the Netherlands (nr.2).
About this song: this song has a lot of layers in it; usually, in the major part of this world's songs, there are one or more layers that are not a hundred percent beautiful... in this song all layers are perfect. A true Bee Gees masterpiece, Nobel prize worthy !
It is a pity that some backward loudmouth girls decided to screw up the song by cheering too early near the end, killing its grande finale... a typical case of blonde stupidity, emptyheaded who probably even didn't know which band they were attending...
IMMORTALITY
(Barry, Maurice & Robin Gibb)
so this is who I am
and this is all I know
and I must choose to live
for all that I can give
the spark that makes the power grow
and I will stand for my dream if I can
a symbol of my faith in who I am
but you are my only
and I will follow on the road that lies ahead
and I won't let my heart control my head
but you are my only
we don't say goodbye
we don't say goodbye
and I know what I've got to be
immortality
I make my journey through eternity
I keep the memory of you and me, inside
fulfill your destiny
it's there within the child
my storm will never end
my fate is on the wind
the king of the hearts, the jokers wild
we don't say goodbye
we don't say goodbye
I make them all remember me
'cause I have found a dream that must come true
every ounce of me must see it through
but you are my only
I'm sorry I don't have a role for love to play
hang over my heart; I'll find my way
and I will make them give to me
immortality
there is a vision and a fire in me
to keep the memory of you and me, inside
we don't say goodbye
we don't say goodbye
with all my love for you
and what else we may do
we don't say... goodbye

* Written and first recorded by Slim Harpo, the song was released in 1957 as the B-side to his debut single, "I got love if you want it", but went on to become better known than the A-side. So now we know what inspired the Rolling Stones to name their first live album "Got live if you want it"...
edit for headphones. source file is from the 1965 album "the paul butterfield blues band". the idea of this edit was to get this song scream much more, much louder and much heavier...

Recorded in September and December of 1965. Was supposed to be included on the album "Could You Walk On The Water", in 1966, but after that album was censored by Decca, this one song was the only one from that album never to be released officially. The song was recorded at the end of the sessions for "Out of Our Heads" at RCA Studios in Hollywood on September 6, 1965.
Piano: Brian Jones. Acoustic guitars: Brian Jones & Keith Richards. Vocals: Mick Jagger. Bass: Bill Wyman. Drums: Charlie Watts.
ultimateclassicrock.com says: "The song was recorded at the end of the sessions for 'Out of Our Heads' at RCA Studios in Hollywood. Prime Keith licks abound while Charlie and Bill lay down a solid, trad rhythm, as Ian Stewart adds a nice jazzy piano. While it may have been seen at the time as a paint-by-numbers blues romp, it holds up remarkably well nearly 50 years on."
LOOKING TIRED
(Jagger/Richards)
lookin' tired babe, sittin' there on the side
you're gettin' tired babe, sittin' there on the side
ain't in the right place, to try and change the tide
you sit and read, but all you do is moan
you sit and read, but all you do is moan
ain't no wonder, you're sittin' there on your own
you're readin' the cover of a pseudo paperback
you're readin' the cover of a pseudo paperback
displays about writers, chaucer to steinbeck
you're lookin' tired babe, sittin' there on the side
you're lookin' tired babe, sittin' there on the side
it's only yourself, you're takin' for a ride
you say you won't change, but do you really care
you say you won't change, but do you really care
you can't do much just sittin' there in your chair
i said, hey babe, hey where you been all night?
i said, hey babe, hey where you been all night?
your clothes all tangled, sure ain't talkin' right
you're lookin' tired babe, sittin' there on the side
you're lookin' tired babe, sittin' there on the side
you ain't in the right place, to try and change the tide

According to Gaudio, he was dozing off while watching the John Payne/Rhonda Fleming/Ronald Reagan movie "Tennessee's Partner" when he heard Payne's character slap Rhonda Fleming in the face. After the slap, Fleming's character replied, "Big girls don't cry." Gaudio wrote the line on a scrap of paper, fell asleep, and wrote the song the next morning. However, the line does not appear in that film. According to Bob Crewe, he was dozing off in his Manhattan home with the television on when he awoke to see Payne manhandling Fleming in "Slightly Scarlet", a 1956 film noir based on a James M. Cain story. The line is heard in that film.
Like "Sherry", the lead in "Big Girls Don't Cry" is sung mostly in falsetto. With this song The Four Seasons became the first rock-era act to hit the top spot on the Hot 100 with their first two chart entries (their first single, "Bermuda"/"Spanish Lace", did not appear on any Billboard chart in 1961).

UNDER MY THUMB
(Jagger/Richards)
under my thumb, is the woman who once had me down
under my thumb, there's the girl who once pushed me around
it's down to me, oh yeah, the way she talks when she's spoken to
down to me, the change has come, she's under my thumb
under my thumb, there's the squirmin' dog she's just had her day
under my thumb, is the woman who has just changed her way
it's down to me, oh yeah, the way she talks when she's spoken to
Down to me, the change has come, s's under my thumb
ah, ah, say it's alright
it's down to me, oh yeah, the way she talks when she's spoken to
down to me, the change has come, she's under my bum
say it's alright
under my thumb, there's a Siamese cat of a girl
under my thumb, she's the sweetest, shit in the world
it's down to me, oh yeah, the way she does just a what she told
down to me, this girl, she's under my thumb
ah yeah, say it's alright, say it's alright (etc.)
