This footage is incredibly well shot and composed on 16mm film, and yet I can't find any record of an official release-whoever filmed this lovely eight-and-a-half minute could have gotten work at any studio of the time IMHO. I wonder if this piece was originally meant for release as a travelogue of if we're just looking at an incredibly talented tourist with a good camera-likewise, the only automobile I see clearly resembles a 1922 model but there's no guarantee that it's brand new...with no credits, official release date or other clues i'll just have to place this feature at mid-1920's, sit back and enjoy...
And enjoyable it most certainly is, as we see a complete picture of the place from both the New York and Canadian sides- Honeymoon Bridge, Victoria park and it's electric trolleys, Hennepin View and the marker of its Namesake, Goat Island, Horseshoe Falls, Prospect Point, Luna island, American Falls and all of the well-dressed people who enjoy it. And of course the red ferry, inadvertently photobombing most of the scenes while making its rounds...
This footage languished in the Orgone Cinema 16mm Archives in a remarkable state of preservation-until found by the video restorer known as NASS, who ran the composition through a Neural Net and:
✔ FPS boosted to 60 frames per second
✔ Image resolution boosted up to HD
✔ Improved video sharpness and brightness
✔ Colorized
✔added sound effects
As I take an all too brief respite in the mist of Niagra Falls, I raise a glass of sparkling cider to NASS and all Media Preservationists everywhere...Colorized, Soundtrack.
