simon & garfunkel - I am a rock - stereo remix II
Edit 2 for headphones. This song was first performed by Paul Simon alone as the opening track on his album "The Paul Simon Songbook" which he originally recorded and released in August 1965, only in the United Kingdom (until 1981). Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel re-recorded it December 1965 * and included it on "Sounds of Silence", January 1966. A US #3 hit, Holland and Sweden #10 (I remember I was twelve, so impressed, and trying to note down the lyrics that year), UK #17 **, Australia #20, Canada #22, Germany #35 (too busy listening to Nancy's "Boots" or Frank Sinatra's "Strangers", "Sloop John B" and "Paperback Writer" by some long gone by English boy band... Source of the edit is the song on the 2014 remastered album "Sounds Of Silence".
I AM A ROCK
(Paul Simon)
a winter's day, in a deep and dark December
I am alone, gazing from my window to the streets below
on a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow
I am a rock, I am an island
I've built walls, a fortress deep and mighty
that none may penetrate
I have no need of friendship, friendship causes pain
it's laughter and it's loving I disdain
I am a rock, I am an island
don't talk of love, well I've heard the word before
it's sleeping in my memory
I won't disturb the slumber of feelings that have died
if I never loved I never would have cried
I am a rock, I am an island
I have my books, and my poetry to protect me
I am shielded in my armor
hiding in my room, safe within my womb
I touch no one and no one touches me
I am a rock, I am an island
and a rock feels no pain, and an island never cries...

* The guitarist was Ralph Casale, who was a top session player in the '60s. He remembers organist Al Kooper and drummer Bobby Gregg - both associated with Bob Dylan - also performing on the song.
