Why is this character in this scene? What are they trying to get out of it? What stands in their way of getting it? What are the consequences if they don't get what they want? Answering these questions in EVERY scene of your novel will help give character purpose for being there and bring momentum and movement to the scene as well as more organic dialogue as characters no longer simply exist in a space because the author says so, but because they have a reason for being there and doing what they are doing.
