Ban Som Kob Ngam บ้านส้มกบงาม
This low sandstone outcrop, situated among farmland is to the west of the city of Nakhon Ratchasima. It must have served as a very convenient source of sandstone for the numerous Khmer sanctuaries in the district. The site sits just north of the village of the same name and is today covered in scrub and trees. It reveals traces of numerous excavated and partially dug rectangular blocks. Several split and broken blocks left in situ can also be seen.
Unlike certain other quarries in the region, few, if any, completed blocks remain at the site suggesting that perhaps the relatively small area had already been quarried out before the temple building period finished.
There are 8 zones on the site and it’s a nice walk through the trees to view. There are also fossil remains in the sandstone with the most famous being a 113 million year old freshwater turtle fossils named after the region.
It’s a nice trip and worth a visit to anyone interested in seeing part of how the stone temples were constructed.
