Cathaleen-ni-Hoolihan by Arnold Bax

While Bax came from an English family, he developed a profound interest in the works of the Irish poet William Butler Yeats. After a visit to Ireland in 1902, Bax would state he found ‘…the Celt within me stood revealed’. This fascination with Irish culture led to his choice of the Irish mythological figure Kathleen Ni Houlihan as the topic of his first tone poem for orchestra.
