Hello everyone, welcome to Planet Ayurveda. In this video, Dr. Sheetal Garg is talking about Ayu (life span). What is Ayu? According to the Acharya Charaka of Ayurveda - “Sharireindriyasatvatmasanyogo dhari jivitam, nityagschanubandhsch prayayerayuuchhyate.” The verse means the combination of body, senses, mind and soul is called Ayu, which means Ayu is a complete balance between our body, our senses, our mind and soul. If we see Ayu according to this verse then the synonym of the Ayu is - Dhari. Ayu is called Dhari. Dhari means to possess which possesses our body that means don’t let emaciate the Rasa and Rakta dhatu. That Ayu possesses our body. Beside this we call Ayu - Jivitam means which holds life and also called as Nityaga, nityaga means speed. That means as long as there is Ayu in our body, it keeps speed in our body, keeps movement due to which our heart beats, so that it also comes under that movement. So, beside this is Anubandh, anubandh means connection, relation. Ayu has a relation in our body with the Par-Apar body in any form. So these all are the synonyms of the Ayu. Beside this Maharishi Charaka categorised Ayu in 4 types in a very beautiful verse which is like this - “Hitahitam sukham dukham aayush tasya hitam hitam, manam ch tachh yatrokatam aurveda sa uchyate.” means Ayu is of 4 types in our Ayurveda - Hita ayu, Ahita ayu, Sukha ayu, and Dukha ayu. So if we talk about Sukha ayu, i will talk about it first, what is Sukha ayu? That person or human being who has no physical problem, no mental problem, and beside this the person who is healthy, young, who has strength and is couragious, who has knowledge, who has name and fame and is successful, such a person is called as having Sukha ayu. The opposite of this, if someone is in sorrow, has diseases, so that Ayu comes under Dukha ayu. Now we wil talk about Hita ayu, what is Hita ayu? Means the person who think about the favour of other person, the person who is compassionate towards other people and who is peace lover, who loves peace, who has a good scientific knowledge, who serves elders, and in whose mind, we caled that emotions like desires, anger, greed, affection, jealousy, if these emotions are not there, who is not greedy, who is satisfied in himself, who has good health, so this kind of life span comes under Hita ayu. And the opposite of this ayu is called Ahita ayu. So how beautifully in the Ayurvedic texts that our ayu, ayu means the lifespan from our birth till death, that is called as Ayu. And the science of Ayu, to know about ayu, that is Ayurveda. So how beautifully Maharishi Charaka has explained ayu in our ancient text books. So Sukha ayu and Dukha ayu refers to our once individual health. Hita ayu and Ahita ayu that refers to our social health. So this is the definition of Ayu and the types of ayu.
