Israel acted unilaterally by launching Operation Yoav on October 15, 1948, sweeping most of the Egyptian forces out of the Negev, leaving four thousand Egyptian troops surrounded in the Faluja pocket.A frustrated UK PM Bevin now joined Marshall in drafting Security Council resolutions calling for the immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces. Bevin insisted that the draft resolution must include a threat that failure of any party – meaning Israel, of course - to withdraw to the 14 October lines would subject the violator to UN sanctions Bevin’s plot to steal the Negev may have been thwarted, but his obsessive wish to crush the Jewish state led him to order the Royal Air Force based in Egypt into the skies of the Sinai Desert in January 1949.
