Note: Anthony (Tony) Martin (1942 – 2013) was born in Trinidad and Tobago, and as a "protected" member of the British Commonwealth was in a privileged position to receive his higher education in London and Hull, and then, emigrating to the U.S., at Michigan State University. On completion of his Ph.D. in 1973, he was immediately hired by the elite women's institution of higher education Wellesley College, where he was given the opportunity of founding its African studies department. Given tenure in the unusually short time frame of 2 years, Martin was then named full professor in 1979. Despite the "onslaught" to which he was subjected, as recounted here, Martin remained on the faculty of Wellesley until his retirement in 2007. -- Source: Wiki, with redactions
