the rolling stones - gotta get away - processed 'stereo'
Edit for headphones. Recorded September 6 & 7, 1965. Released on "Out Of Our Heads" (UK) and "December's Children" (US) in 1965. Guitars: Brian Jones & Keith Richards. Lead & backing vocals: Mick Jagger. Bass: Bill Wyman. Drums: Charlie Watts. Tambourine: James W. Alexander.*
Allmusic song review by Matthew Greenwald says it's a great example of the Jagger/Richards songwriting team's growth, the song showcased their love of soul music (particularly Otis Redding) and their ability to weld (connect) this with their own rock style. The main guitar riff and overall feel is quite similar to "I'm Free," which also appeared on "December's Children". Assessing (evaluating) a relationship during its final stages, the absence of malice (hate) - which is usually at the core of the Stones' lyrics in this type of song - is refreshing. A sense of resignation (acceptance) takes the lyrics away from the juvenile arena here, and this is underlined by Mick Jagger's fine vocal, one of his best on the album.
* JAMES W. ALEXANDER (1916-1996)
Mississippi-born Alexander was an all-around session musician (bassist, guitarist, singer, drummer and percussionist) and producer who recorded extensively with 1960s and 1970s soul artists, such as Sam Cooke.
GOTTA GET AWAY
(Jagger/Richards)
baby, the truth is out so don't deny
baby to think I believed all your lies
darlin' I can't stand to see your face
it's the truth, you understand
I got to get away, got to get away
gotta, gotta, gotta get away
got to get away
baby, I don't want to live here no more
baby, though I tore your pictures off my walls
darlin' this old room's falling in on me
you understand the truth now
I got to get away, got to get away
gotta, gotta, gotta get away
got to get away
baby, oh, how could you take away your clothes
baby, don't screw up this old heart of gold
darling, this will rule my social flare
you understand me now
I got to get away, got to get away
gotta, gotta, gotta get away
got to get away
