Part 64 – The Police – Roles & Responsibilities - section (i)
I think that there are two principal questions we need to ask with regard to the Police. They are as follows?
1. What is their role in society?
2. Are they doing what they should be doing?
What is their role in society?
I’m going to rephrase this question just to make it a little clearer …
What is it that the Police ordinarily do? What are their usual duties? What should they be doing? So under ordinary circumstances …
• They should maintain law and order. They are the agency tasked with enforcing the laws of the land. In the States, the Police are referred to as “law enforcement” for this very reason.
• They should prevent crime by detecting, investigating, pursuing and prosecuting criminals.
• They should protect members of the public and their property against criminal acts which might result in harm being done to individuals. They should therefore maintain a required level of safety in society as a whole.
All the above serve to increase the quality of life for the ordinary citizen. Without the police carrying out these duties, these responsibilities that they are obliged to carry out, the quality of life for the ordinary citizen would suffer. There would a break down in law and order and all manner of crimes would necessarily increase. In short, chaos would ensue. Few of us would want that.
Suffice to say, that the Police play a hugely important role in society. The above list is very much abridged. The role of the police encompasses so much more … Their remit extends to cover a vast array of different jobs. For example, they are entrusted with various licensing and regulatory activities. But, that is beyond the remit of this video. So to move on …
This brings us to our next question …
Are they doing what they should be doing with regard to the current situation?
I have to answer this by saying “No.” The way I see it, the Police don’t seem to be doing what they should be doing. At least, I have to question the approach that they have thus far taken.
The Police should be working for the populace, but in this instance, they don’t appear to be doing that. In fact, they appear to be working against the populace.
It strikes me that something somehow has gone wrong in a serious way.
This seems to be not an unreasonable assessment of the situation. I would like to think that I ‘m correct in coming to this conclusion and that most people would, by and large, be in agreement.
I should say that I’m simply expressing my personal opinion. Maybe I’m wrong in saying this, but anyway.
To come to their defence, I think that the Police have been placed in a very awkward position.
They are, after all, tasked with maintaining law and order. And they are required to ensure that the laws of the land are followed. They are on the streets doing what they see as their duty.
I therefore don’t think we can blame the ordinary officers per se. They are just following orders. But more on that shortly.
Who is to blame then? Who is responsible for this
