Na de handel in opium uit de Nederlandse kolonie Indonesië (Nederlands-Indië) al tot stand te hebben gebracht, domineerde de Nederlandse Cocaïnefabriek de internationale cocaïnemarkt tot aan de Tweede Wereldoorlog, toen de fabriek overging op amfetamine (speed).
Zowel in de Eerste als de Tweede Wereldoorlog verkocht de Nederlandse Cocaïnefabriek cocaïne en later amfetamine aan legers van de naties in oorlog.
