The displacer type Stirling engine consists of two primary components: the displacer piston and the power piston. The displacer piston moves hot air to the cold region and vice versa, while the power piston generates mechanical work.

Displacer Piston Movement: When the displacer piston is at the upper part of the cylinder, it moves hot air to the cold region, causing a decrease in pressure. Conversely, when the displacer is at the lower part, it moves cold air to the hot region, increasing the pressure.

Pressure Modulation: The displacer piston’s role is crucial in modulating the engine's internal pressure. It does not directly contribute to the crankshaft's rotation but ensures a continuous temperature difference.

Power Piston Function: The power piston is driven by the pressure changes induced by the displacer piston. When the engine reaches maximum pressure, the power piston moves, providing the necessary force to operate the crankshaft. This movement occurs at a 90-degree phase angle relative to the displacer piston.
