Sadie SadAss our 5 year old miniature donkey had a "Sticky Stifle" that caused her to drag her left rear toe in the sand in our paddocks. Today's video discusses how we fixed Sadie's Sticky Stifle without surgery.

So what is a 'Stifle"...? The stifle plays an important function as part of a donkey's standing apparatus (it is an arrangement of muscles, tendons, and ligaments in the donkey's hind legs that work together so the donkey can remain standing while using very little effort). Basically it's the rear knee cap (Patella) which locks into place while standing and immediately unlocks when the donkey moves.

This stifle plays a huge part when donkeys sleep while standing. Normally, the donkey can flex the joint with little effort to unlock it. However, sometimes unlocking the stifle becomes delayed. A small delay will cause mild symptoms, but long delays result in more severe symptoms. Medically, this condition is called "upward fixation of the patella."
