Because using a VPN means that the police cant just go to the internet provider to find your IP adress, they have to find the VPN company first and come with a good excuse, VPN companies dont just give in so easely as internet providers, otherwise they would be out of job fast. And because many of these companies are worldwide based...then its much harder for authorities to hack you.
