Make some noise, Pontiac is back! At least that’s what the latest Car and Driver magazine ad hints at, and while it states it is a joke, I will go over every single argument why I believe Pontiac indeed is returning to General Motors’ lineup.
First off, the ad jokes about Hybrids, Challenger splitter guards and Coors runs.
I divide each point into two sections, smaller but interesting pieces of evidence pointing to a Pontiac return, and the big elements that are mandatory for Pontiac to be successful in such a revival.
From 80s nostalgia booming online, to GM with its Nascar problem, centennial anniversaries and overall nostalgia over Pontiacs, from Grand Prix to Bonneville, Firebird to TransAm and GTOs, we go over each one of these potential hints that it is in fact time.
I want to credit @Veronica.Wheels on Youtube for the TransAm Worldwide bit of sleuthing (watch her video for her story on this point) though I will add that my own research shows this aftermarket modding company pivoting away from TransAm retro kits to a 1970 Chevelle inspired model, the 70/SS.
Is there an appetite from consumers, gearheads for a Pontiac? I go over what Pontiac needs to do, to ensure that the enthusiast wants to buy any new cars. We don’t want four dour Camaros or Camaro EVs or whatever other things Chevy considered under the brilliant leadership of Mary Barra. Give us simple old school cool!
Finally, Pontiac will need a CEO. And I cannot ignore the timing of Tim Kuniskis leaving Dodge. While he did preside over the end of the Dodge Charger and Challenger, Scat Pack 392 and Hellcats, without him, we wouldn’t even have these cars, as well as the bonkers Demon 170. For all the missteps in the current direction by Mopar, this would be a way for him to redeem himself
And Make Pontiacs great again.
