The most IMPORTANT air filter test if you have a carburetor! Backfire test-blowing up filters! Ep 97

We all know how important air filters are to engines. Testing how filters can handle dust, sand and even paint is valuable information, but let’s face it, others can perform these long term tests better. But why do they never focus on the number one problem carbureted cars have with air filters?
Back fires can lead to catastrophic engine failure. How? Simply by burning a hole in the filter material, it allows debris inside your engine that will cause serious damage. So this is why I wondered, which air filter brand is the best, and not only that, but I test a cloth reusable/washable style filter and put them all through extreme testing.
I pick up every single 9-10 inch filters I can find, the Spectre 4805, Spectre 2606, Autoextra 619 and the Edelbrock 1218. The sand test measures to see how fast the filters will clog as well as showing any tears in the filter fabric. The paint is a much more harsh test, to show how much debris the filters can remove from a suspension or humid dirty environment.
Engine vacuum is simulated by the shop-vac vacuum, connected to the test rig, and each filter gets put through the tests. I do go over each filter at this stage, before moving on to the most important test.
Using starting fluid (ether) I spray inside the filter and the filter housing, simulating the conditions of a backfire, where reverse vacuum pushes fuel air mixture back up through the carburetor. Ignition from poor valve time allows the flame from the cylinder head to travel up the intake, through the carb and into the filter housing. This cannot be avoided at times, so I thought it would be interesting to see how well does a filter stand up.
Please watch the whole video because I do include the bloopers and a funny/serious skit about how the T-shirts and merch are being stolen. Not poor enough I guess!
