Hemocyanin (Hc; plural: Hcs) is the oxygen transporter protein present in the hemolymph of arthropods (eg: horseshoe crabs, arachnids) and molluscs (eg: octopi).
Why is hemocyanin used instead of hemoglobin?
Hemocyanin is much bigger than hemoglobin and can bind 96 oxygen atoms. Unlike hemoglobin, hemocyanin floats freely in blood. In addition, it is a much more stable molecule that can function at temperatures up to 90°C or even in creatures living in cold climates.
Well hemocyanin is only 1/4 as efficient as oxygen as hemoglobin so by replacing the hemoglobin with hemocyanin, it takes away from the oxygen circulating in the body 😷
