Dr. Charles Buhler is the co-founder of Exodus Propulsion Technology and lead scientist and co-founder of NASA’s Electrostatics and Surface Physics Laboratory at Kennedy Space Center. Dr. Buhler has a PhD in Condensed Matter Physics from Florida State University, which he received in 2000 while working on high temperature superconductors at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory.

What is this story’s technological significance? A propulsion method without utilizing hydrocarbon-based fuel as a propulsion output but redirected using electrical means. Modifications of this technology would allow material manufacturing in zero gravity. This technology would provide travel from Los Angeles, USA to Sydney, Australia in a few hours depending on if the traveling method is atmospheric or not. Travel to the moon to mine helium 3 for aneutronic fusion energy production here on Earth. Just 50 tons of helium 3 could electrically run the USA for a year! Then there is ability to mine precious rare elements like gold or platinum from the asteroid belt without long travel times in excess of years but within months. This opens up possibilities for those that are disgruntled with living on Earth that could move to other planets within our system or to the stars. We already have the technology now to produce protein without agriculture or animal husbandry utilizing electrical fermenters and carbon dioxide. This technology opens a whole new paradigm of possibilities that were at one time science fiction.
