chess : how engines play
Short explanation of two experimental chess engines, PeSTO and OpenTal, with animations and music.
In the meantime you see these two engines play a game with "Sugar AI", a StockFish derivative, and "Blunder", both strong engines. It's an endgame from a fixed starting position, which was composed to induce all kinds of complications, while 'zugzwang' occurs : each player has only two knights and some pawns.
The experimental engines play black with a plus pawn and they should be able to win this position. However the white engines are very strong and manage to defend the position : both games end in a draw.
The games clearly show some basic chess principles in practice : how tempo, material and the threat of promotion intertwine. The time format is 10 seconds per move with 3 seconds bonus, so both engines make fast decisions ..
You can enjoy the show !
And you may guess the moves while the games progress ..

Mikhail Tal said once : "My head is filled with sunshine. In the first game of my match with Botvinnik I will play one E4 and I shall win!"
