One of the most famous Prussian marches of the 19th century, composed by music director Johann Gottfried Piefke (1815–1884) of the Leib-Grenadier Regiment "King Friedrich Wilhelm III." (1st Brandenburg) No. 8 in Frankfurt an der Oder.
The march was written in 1871, after the victory of Prussia and its allies in the Franco-Prussian War, and was first performed in Frankfurt (Oder) at the victory parade.
The march became very well known in 1909 when it was played by the music corps of the 3rd Guards Regiment on foot at the changing of the guard in the Berlin Palace and was extremely well received by Kaiser Wilhelm II. After that, Prussia's Gloria was played by every Berlin Guard Regiment when the palace guard marched up. In 1912, the march was included in the Prussian army march collection.
In the Federal Republic of Germany, Preußens Gloria is one of the most popular army marches of the Bundeswehr and is often played on public occasions, especially during state visits.
The march is also played by the Chilean, Swedish and British armies.
Due to its high level of popularity, Preußens Gloria is also regularly played by brass bands and drum corps, for example it is the standard march at shooting club festivals.
