Why Trying to Get Rid of Anxiety Makes it Worse
The anxiety fire is a metaphor for the counterintuitive nature of anxiety. Trying to get rid of your anxiety and anxiety symptoms will only make things worse, like throwing fuel onto the fire. Anxiety is a counterintuitive problem, therefore we need a counterintuitive solution. Remember, whatever we resist, persists.
A fire will go out in one of two ways. Either the fire will eventually burn itself out or the fire will be put out by pouring water onto it. When it comes to anxiety our first instincts of how to respond to it are usually wrong and instead of making it better we inadvertently make the problem worse. Essentially, the main reason that you are not overcoming your anxiety is because you keep pouring fuel onto the anxiety fire.
Whether you are experiencing Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, etc., this concept applies. The harder we try to get rid of anxiety, the more we reinforce it. The paradox is that we must do the opposite to what our instincts are telling us to do.
