The Klabautermann (from Low German klabastern = to rumble) is a ship's ghost or goblin in seafaring superstition, who, mostly invisible, warns the captain of dangers and likes to play jokes.
The figure of the Klabautermann is associated with sailing ships. He lives in the hold, where he hammers and throws boards; sometimes he lives under the windlass. He also comes on deck, climbs the mast, climbs the rigging and sits on the bowsprit of sailing ships. On board he makes himself noticeable by rumbling and other noises. His appearance is like that of a sailor - with a hammer and pipe, with red hair and green teeth. If he shows up, this is a bad sign and the ship is threatened with sinking. Some sailors claim he doesn't leave the ship until it goes down. According to old seamans customs, there is a chicken on every ship to deter the Klabautermann.
Text:
Hört zu: Der Kaplan von Norderney
kennt Seemannsgarn aus der alten Zeit.
Wenn er den bärtigen Männern erzählt,
beginnt jeder Satz mit Jo - HO!
Refrain:
Ich sah den Klabautermann,
er hatt` eine lütt` Prinz Heinrich an.
Tief schaut er dir ins Gesicht,
halte stand, dann krepierst du nicht!
So tranken sie in geselliger Rund`,
im Königspesel zur Abendstund`,
brüllten und lachten und johlten viel,
über Hooge schallte es froh. HO!
Da da da...
JOHO, die Sirenen, die Glocken warnen,
Land unter von Sylt bis Helgoland.
Rungholt ruft laut deinen Namen.
Seemann! Halte stand! HO!
Einst muss doch wieder Flaute sein.
Einen Deutschen Matrosen kriegt ihr nicht klein!
Bald singen wir La Paloma Ohe
auf der Reeperbahn nachts um halb eins.
:
Listen: The chaplain of Norderney
knows sailor's yarn from the old days.
When he tells the bearded men
every sentence starts with Jo - Ho!
Chorus:
I saw the Klabautermann
he was wearing a small Prince Heinrich cap.
He looks deep into your eyes
hold out, then you won't croak!
So they drank in good company,
in the Königspesel pub late at night,
roared and laughed and hooted a lot,
it echoed joyfullly over the island of Hooge. Ho!
Jo-Ho, the sirens, the bells warn,
land flooded from Sylt to Heligoland.
Rungholt calls your name out loudly.
Sailor! Hold out! Ho!
Someday there must be doldrum again.
You can't break down a German sailor!
Soon we'll be singing "La Paloma Ohe"
on the Reeperbahn at half past midnight.
